Man Utd 'open talks' with Barcelona over Ivan Rakitic transfer

Manchester United have 'opened talks' with Barcelona regarded the potential signing of out of favour midfielder Ivan Rakitic.

The 31-year-old has seen his play time diminish this season, featuring for just 186 minutes and starting only once.

United were interested in signing Rakitic over the summer, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was unable to add to his midfield ranks upon the closure of the window in August.

And, according to Sport , the Red Devils have enquired about Rakitic, registering their interest in the dynamic central midfielder and opening initial negotiations with Barca.

It is reported that Barcelona are now willing to part with the Croatian international during the January transfer window and want at least £34million.

Rakitic admitted earlier this week that he could quit the Blaugrana in search of more first-team involvement if his current situation fails to improve.

"It's tough because I want to play and not just be part of the team," he said.

"I will do everything possible to change my situation."

Unfortunately for United, they aren't the only side that have re-ignited their interest in the midfielder.

According to the same report, Italian giants Inter Milan have also contacted Barca regarding a potential move for Rakitic.

Rakitic has just under two years left on his current Barcelona contract, running out in the summer of 2021.

However, if move presents itself to the Croat, Sport report he would need to be offered a long-term contract as it will most likely be the last one of his glittering career.
