Man Utd on brink of agreeing new contract with Juan Mata after lengthy talks

Juan Mata is edging closer to signing a contract extension to stay at Manchester United .

The midfielder, who joined United from Chelsea for £37.5million in 2014, is out of contract in two weeks' time and has yet to agree a new deal.

But talks are ongoing between Mata's representatives and United, with those close to the discussions claiming it is “90 per cent” certain an agreement will be reached.

Both parties have been talking for months about an extension, but have so far been unable to agree fresh terms for Mata, who currently earns £140,000-a-week with the Old Trafford giants.

It is understood Mata, who made 22 Premier League appearances last season, wanted a significant hike on his salary to stay, with United unwilling to meet the original demands set out by the player's representatives, given his status as a squad player.

But with both parties locked in talks this week, a compromise could be reached in coming days, with Mata likely to pen a one-year extension to prolong his spell at United.

The Reds have already lost Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera this summer, while £89million club-record signing Paul Pogba wants to leave and goalkeeper David De Gea's future remains unclear.

Although they are reluctant to sell Pogba, United will demand £150m for the midfielder if he tries to force through a move, with Real Madrid keen to sign the France World Cup winner.

Talks with United No.1 De Gea – out of contract next summer – have reached an impasse over the 28-year-old Spain international's wage demands.

De Gea is said to want in excess of £400,000-a-week to sign a new deal, although United, as with Mata, want to reach a compromise figure that suits both sides.
