Man Utd news: Truth behind Sheikh Jassim takeover bid as transfer target opens door

The race to buy Manchester United is heating up like never before.

After battling with INEOS chief executive Sir Jim Ratcliffe for the best part of eight months, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani was claimed on Monday to have been given the go-ahead from the Glazers. But all wasn't what it seemed and their tussle for the keys to Old Trafford is set to continue into the latter stages of a potentially defining week.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag is scouring the transfer market in search of ways to strengthen his squad, with the summer window officially opening today. Harry Kane, Mason Mount, Frenkie de Jong and Kim Min-jae among others are still being linked, but a target first linked 12 months ago has now resurfaced.

Here's a round-up of the latest news from Old Trafford.

Truth behind Sheikh Jassim claim emerges

The Qatari news outlet which was credited for breaking the news that Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani's bid had won the race to buy Manchester United has backtracked on their claims. The development sent Red Devils supporters into a frenzy, with the club's stock price even spiking.

But little over 12 hours later, fans who were excited over Sheikh Jassim's alleged victory were brought back down to Earth, with the organisation denying that the story was their own. In truth, both the Qatari banker and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are yet to have heard from the Glazers regarding whether or not they'll be named as the preferred bidder, a decision which is expected some time this week.

Timber opens door to Ajax exit

Ajax defender Jurrien Timber has reignited speculation over a move to Manchester United and admitting that he's "not sure" he'll still be in Amsterdam by the start of next season. The Netherlands international, 21, was given his Ajax debut by Erik ten Hag as a teenager and the United manager has long been keen to reunite with him.

Timber is open to a transfer, too, telling Vandaag Inside: "Will I stay with Ajax anyway? I'm not sure, I can't say that. I'm not in talks with Ajax now. My agent had a good talk a few times, but it's not like we're talking about anything right now. There is a lot of concrete interest and I have made agreements with Ajax."

Hojlund responds to interest

Atalanta wonderkid Rasmus Hojlund has described Manchester United as a "huge club" amid increasing reports linking him with a move to Old Trafford. The Denmark international, 20, has tipped for a £40million transfer this summer but he'd be content with staying in Italy for a second season.

"It is a huge club, so I must have done something right if it's rumoured they want me," Hojlund told Tipsbladet when asked about United and their interest. "We have to see what happens. As you see and hear, I imagine a lot could happen to quite a few strikers this summer, as many clubs are looking for a No.9. Something will definitely happen there, and then we'll have to wait and see if I am included in it."
