Man Utd news: Gary Neville questions Erik ten Hag's transfer strategy as bid launched

With the transfer window opening in just one day's time, Manchester United's focus will be on reinforcing Erik ten Hag's squad.

But even before announcing their first signing, Gary Neville has questioned Ten Hag's strategy for the upcoming window. Neville has admitted his surprise at the Dutchman's pursuit of Chelsea star Mason Mount, who has agreed personal terms with the Red Devils.

That criticism comes as United have been given the chance to sign a replacement for David de Gea for a cut-price fee and the Premier League giants launched a bid for Randal Kolo Muani. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Manchester United news.

Neville questions Ten Hag

Gary Neville has admitted his surprise that Erik ten Hag has opted to pursue a deal for Mason Mount. The England international has signed personal terms with the Red Devils, but Neville is unsure if he is the right fit for Ten Hag's side.

"I am surprised about the Mason Mount one, to be honest with you," Neville told the Metro. "For the reported £60million fee… he is a very good player, that isn't a question for me. But I look at the players United have got already.

"Do I think Mason Mount is the player to go in and sort all that out? I'm not quite sure. I think you would have been better off going and playing £100million plus on Jude Bellingham or £80-100million on Declan Rice and getting something you think can be the real thing."

Cut-price De Gea replacement

Manchester United have been given the chance to sign Diogo Costa for a discount price. Costa is being lined up by the Red Devils to replace David de Gea, who is still yet to sign a new contract.

The Spaniard had a mixed campaign, winning the Premier League's Golden Glove but making a series of glaring mistakes. That has led Ten Hag to consider bringing in fresh competition for the goalkeeper position.

Costa is one of United's top targets, though had previously been valued at around £64.2million. Now though, it appears Porto are willing to accept a cut-price fee as they battle some financial issues.

United launch striker bid

Meanwhile, United are preparing to launch a bid for Eintracht Frankfurt star Randal Kolo Muani. Boss Ten Hag is prioritising signing a striker in this summer's window, with Harry Kane being a top target.

But with Tottenham holding firm over their desire to keep Kane, United are exploring alternative targets. One of them is Kolo Muani, who scored 23 goals in all competitions in the season just gone.

And the Red Devils are now expected to make their move for the Frenchman, with an opening offer set to be made. United are battling Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich for the 24-year-old's signature.
