Man Utd monitoring James Maddison as club consider January move to continue Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rebuild

Manchester United are monitoring James Maddison as Ole Gunnar Solskjær weighs up a move in January or next summer.

The Leicester playmaker is on a list of potential home-grown targets the Norwegian has identified for his Old Trafford rebuild.

Jadon Sancho is another British starlet Solskjær wants to bring to the club, with Declan Rice and Sean Longstaff also among the rising domestic talents he believes can transform United’s fortunes.

Solskjær registered his interest in Maddison this summer and has opted to maintain a watching brief along with a host of Premier League rivals.

He will get the chance to see the 22-year-old up close on Saturday as United host Brendan Rodgers’ high flying Leicester.

Maddison created more chances than any other player in the Premier League last season, which has also earned him admirers at Manchester City and Tottenham.

Solskjær has been assured by United’s hierarchy that he will be given more transfer windows to complete his squad overhaul after signing Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James this summer.

He is determined to improve his midfield and attack after the departures of Marouane Felliaini, Ander Herrera, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez since he took over at the club.

Maddison fits the profile of the type of young domestic player he wants to inject into his squad. But Leicester’s insistence on holding out for £80m for Maguire during the last window is a pointer to just how hard a bargain they will drive should United firm up their interest in Maddison.

They can expect to pay significantly more than the £22.5m Norwich sold him for last year.
