Man Utd midfield implications on Fred and Co as Man Utd close in on Donny van de Beek

Fred is not likely to leave Manchester United this summer despite the imminent arrival of Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

United are closing in on a £40m deal to sign the 23-year-old, and confirmation of the move could be announced as soon as the next 24 hours.

Naturally, many fans are wondering what this is likely to mean for United's preferred starting line-up next season, with most predicting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will play Van de Beek in the No.6 role behind Bruno Fernandes and alongside Paul Pogba in the centre of the midfield.

This means Fred may not be granted as many minutes as he would like, and some have speculated that he could therefore seek a transfer this summer, with the likes of Turkish side Galatasaray said to be interested.

But according to Manchester Evening News Fred is happy to stay, and Solskjaer does not want to lose the Brazilian.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast next season, Fred is still likely to be an important part of the squad, and will likely rotate with Van de Beek as well as fellow central midfielders Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay.

James Garner, meanwhile, is likely to go out on loan, most probably to a Championship club.

The central midfield position is looking well-stocked for United, then, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to turn his attentions to other matters once Van de Beek is confirmed.

According to The Times Solskjaer is still desperate to add a centre-back, right winger and striker to his squad before the transfer window slams shut next month.

This may mean, however, that they need to sell before they can buy, and the likes of Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard are most likely to move on.
