Man Utd medical staff's coronavirus fears laid bare by Europa League assessment

Manchester United’s medics were so concerned about the coronavirus outbreak that they even checked the players DURING their Europa League victory in Austria.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were given half-time health assessments as the Reds beat LASK 5-0 in Linz on Thursday night.

Medical staff asked players to tell them immediately if they felt unwell – illustrating how concerned the top Premier League clubs were about the spread of COVID-19 as the government refused to announce a suspension of sporting events.

United boss Solskjaer said: “Our medical staff have been watching the situation minute-to-minute.

“Even at half-time against LASK, we had the doctors checking on the players.

“Don’t forget, we are part of the general public as well so we have a duty to obey what the authorities and experts decide on.”

Some top clubs were stunned when the Premier League announced on Thursday that games would go ahead as planned this weekend.

That was after prime minister Boris Johnson told the nation that it was not yet time to close stadia doors on fans.

Within hours, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi had both tested positive for the virus - prompting a U-turn.

Asked if he would allow his family to attend a football match during the coronavirus crisis, Solskjaer said: “That’s not for me to answer.

“We just listen to the authorities and the bodies who decide.

"We just have to go with the decisions that are made.”
