Man Utd 'make transfer approach' for Atletico Madrid's Thomas Lemar

Manchester United have reportedly been in contact with representatives of Thomas Lemar over a potential transfer this summer.

The French winger is out of favour at Atletico Madrid and looks primed for the exit door at the end of the season.

Lemar has previously attracted interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, though it is United who have made the first move.

ESPN report United chiefs have already held talks with Lemar's team last week regarding a switch to Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old only moved to Atleti two years ago for £65million, but United will be hopeful of securing his services for a reduced figure.

Lemar has struggled to become a key player under boss Diego Simeone, who favours a more rigid system, which is not particularly suited to the winger's talents.

Nevertheless he has still made regular appearances for his side, clocking up 24 matches this season, but is yet to hit the back of the net or provide an assist.

More than half of his appearances have come as a substitute, and it is unlikely he will want to stick around at the Wanda Metropolitano another season, especially with the Euros now moved to next summer.

Simeone admitted Lemar had 'not lived up to expectations' back in January, and conceded the player could now leave.

Tottenham, Chelsea and Wolves were believed to be among the clubs also monitoring Lemar's situation.

Meanwhile United have been busy working on targets in preparation for further spending in the coming months.

Youngster Jude Bellingham looks increasingly likely to complete a switch to the Red Devils after being shown round the club's facilities earlier this month.

Birmingham are resigned to losing the starlet, but are expected to hold out for at least £30million by way of a transfer fee.

Leicester's James Maddison is also on United's list of targets.
