Man Utd legend Paul Scholes explains clash with former Man City favourite in Treble reunion match

Paul Scholes says he would never pull out of a 50/50 challenge - even in a friendly game.

The Manchester United legend was involved in a tussle with former Manchester City defender Martín Demichelis during United's Legends' 5-0 win against Bayern Munich in the Treble reunion game on Sunday.

Scholes stood out in midfield as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham, Nicky Butt and David Beckham got on the scoresheet on the 20th anniversary of United's Champions League victory against Bayern Munich that secured the treble of 1999.

Scholes lined up alongside fellow Class of '92 members Beckham, Butt and Gary Neville, and showed he hadn't lost his touch with a commanding display in midfield.

The former England international also provided evidence of his notorious tough tackling, with Demichelis not the only Bayern legend to feel the effects of a Scholes challenge.

And Scholes said he still has to 'look after himself' on the pitch.

"I'm a little bit knackered, as you can tell - my voice has gone a bit," he told BT Sport after coming off as a substitute. "It's been enjoyable. It was a warm day but really enjoyable.

"No, you try not to [lose a competitive edge]. You've got to make it as real as you possibly can and I know Demichelis wasn't happy but he wasn't stopping so I wasn't stopping. Sometimes you have to look after yourself."

Scholes would have scored had Neville not strayed offside on a rare foray forward, with Scholes' subsequent chip chalked off.

And the former Oldham Athletic manager poked fun at his teammate for his part in the build-up.

"It was the best one-two I've ever played with Gary Neville actually. He knew nothing about it!" he said. "But it was just offside, so never mind."

The game raised over £1.5 million for the Manchester United Foundation, and Scholes said it was a successful event all round.

"It was absolutely brilliant," he said. "Obviously it was 20 years ago and for everyone to make the effort and come here is a great achievement and hopefully we can raise a lot of money for the foundation."
