Man Utd legend identifies transfer priority for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must make signing a new centre-back his priority this summer after being handed the full-time job at Manchester United , according to Bryan Robson.

United handed the Norwegian boss a three-year contract on Thursday to make him their manager on a permanent basis.

Solskjaer has won 14 of his 19 games in charge, reviving hopes of a top-four finish and unexpectedly guiding United to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The move has seemed inevitable for many weeks given the transformation United have undergone since Solskjaer arrived on a caretaker basis following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December.

And Old Trafford legend Robson feels a new defender is needed for the boss to fully flourish at United - highlighting the impact Virgil van Dijk has had at Liverpool .

Writing in the Daily Mail , he said: “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the right appointment for Manchester United. Why go anywhere else? But I really believe they now need to buy a commanding centre back.

“Ole has earned his chance and United would be better off spending any millions earmarked for compensation on world-class players to strengthen his hand.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the Man Utd stars that will 'never last' at Old Trafford

“I know he has indicated he doesn’t need a new centre back, but that’s where I’d disagree. Sure, Ole has improved the defending, but we’ve seen the impact Virgil van Dijk has had on Liverpool this season.

“A signing of that magnitude, a commanding leader could catapult United forward. You can see the confidence Van Dijk brings to Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson, his fellow defenders and midfielders.

“That’s the type of player United need to sign. A strong summer of recruitment could be the making of Ole’s legacy — not necessarily players in quantity, but world-class quality.”
