Man Utd instructed to make midfield transfer to get best out of Paul Pogba

Manchester United need “someone behind” Paul Pogba to get the “best” out of him, according to Troy Deeney.

The Frenchman came off the bench in the Red Devils’ 2-1 win over PSG to open their Champions League campaign.

While he enjoyed a strong performance in Paris, the midfielder has suffered a tough time after his claims of a “dream” move to Real Madrid.

It saw Bruno Fernandes take on the midfield in Europe, wearing the armband for the win while Scott McTominay and Fred say behind.

With a clash against Chelsea coming up this weekend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must now decide whether to switch to a formation including Pogba alongside the Portuguese midfielder.

Man United have been told to buy a midfielder this January to get the best out of Paul Pogba (2020 Xavier Laine)

But Deeney, who has 133 goals in nearly 400 appearances for the Hornets that include five season in the Premier League, believes a dip into the January transfer window is necessary.

Speaking to talkSPORT , the Watford forward said: “I can only talk of my own personal experiences with Paul, but I think he’s great.

“As a human being he’s quality.

“Still people are going to go, ‘he’s not quality’, but he’s their best player. On attributes alone he’s their best player.

“Does he get better with more quality players around him? That’s what I’d suggest.

“I think Fernandes is a different type of player and very good, but he’s their most effective. You can see him drive others.

“I would say if you can get someone behind them and let them two go free, that’s when you will see the best of Paul Pogba.”

Despite only coming off the bench for Solskjaer, former United team-mate Ander Herrera hailed the Frenchman as one of the world’s best before the 2-1 win over PSG.

But some believe Pogba has been left “hating” his role at Old Trafford following the arrival of Fernandes.
