Man Utd in prime position to trigger Dayot Upamecano's new bargain release clause

Manchester United are in a good position to sign Dayot Upamecano next summer for a bargain price.

The RB Leipzig defender has been on the radar of Premier League clubs for some time but his valuation has been a stumbling block.

Upamecano is widely considered one of the best young centre-backs on the planet, and has previously commanded a fee upwards of £70million.

But a release clause in his contract, which German publication Bild say will be available next year, will have clubs on red alert.

The paper reports that when the clause becomes active, the French centre-back will be available for just £38m.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Man City and Arsenal have all previously been linked with Upamecano's signature.

But it seems Jurgen Klopp's Reds and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United are best-placed to make a transfer happen.

Both City and Arsenal strengthened their centre-back position this summer while United and Liverpool prioritised adding to their midfield.

Liverpool and United have started the season a little shaky, especially at the back, with the two teams conceding a combined 13 goals last time out.

The clubs will already be considering new centre-backs, and Upamecano available so cheaply will certainly catch their eye.
