Man Utd 'in pole position' for Erling Haaland transfer when release clause sparks scramble

Manchester United are leading the race to sign Erling Haaland next summer, according to reports in Germany.

The Borussia Dortmund star has attracted interest from a host of Europe's top clubs following his performances in recent years.

He signed for the Bundesliga outfit in January 2020 but a reported release clause of £64m will come into play next summer.

Currently they have been able to name their price, but have continued to rebuff offers as they look to retain the 21-year-old.

United were heavily linked with his signature during his time at Red Bull Salzburg, before he eventually moved to Dortmund, and look be heading the chase, reports Bild.

The Red Devils hope the striker's desire to play in the Premier League proves to their advantage whilst Haaland has worked with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the past.

Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City have also been linked with the Norwegian, who has scored 62 times in 63 appearances for Dortmund.

The Blues have added Romelu Lukaku for a club record fee this summer, which makes any move for Haaland extremely unlikely.

Madrid meanwhile, whilst being heavy linked with Haaland, are pursuing Kylian Mbappe.

City are in the market for a striker this summer but have their sights set on Harry Kane, but they could move for the Dortmund star in 12 months should they fail to capture the Tottenham man.

United will have to negotiate with super agent Mino Raiola if they are to sign Haaland.

The Italian represents Paul Pogba and has been outspoken about trying to get the midfielder out of Old Trafford in the past.

Dortmund have already sold Jadon Sancho to United in the current window, but their manager Marco Rose is hoping they can keep Haaland beyond next summer.

He told Bild : "He still has a long-term contract with us [until 2024].

"Just because the public is constantly talking about him leaving next summer, that doesn't necessarily have to be the case.

Where will Erling Haaland end up next summer? Have your say in the comments below.

"In the end, Erling has to decide for himself where he sees his future.

"In any case, we are happy that he is currently playing for us - and, who knows, possibly it'll be even more than just one season if we write an extraordinary story here."

United's forward options could be reshuffled next summer with Edinson Cavani's contract expiring.

Anthony Martial could also depart which would leave Solskjaer with Greenwood as his own central striking option.

When quizzed on a move to United earlier this year Haaland's father, Alfe-Inge, told Sport1: " Manchester United have achieved great success in recent years.

"The club is also trying to build something new there. But to draw comparison now is not so easy because he [Erling] is already playing in Dortmund.

"These are two very traditional clubs with a large fan base and a glorious history. Man United is a very proud club, just like Dortmund in Germany."
