Man Utd 'identify new candidate for director of football role' as part of rebuild

Manchester United are considering Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber for the club's director of football role, according to reports.

The Red Devils are currently preparing for a busy summer, with changes expected both within the playing squad and behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

It comes after a disappointing season for the club, which saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side finish sixth in the Premier League and miss out on a place in next season's Champions League.

With the club looking for a director of football to work alongside Solskjaer and Ed Woodward, The Sun reports that Norwich sporting director Webber is being considered for the role.

According to the paper, Webber has huge admirers at Old Trafford after helping both the Canaries and Huddersfield to the top tier.

His success at Carrow Road has been particularly impressive, helping Daniel Farke's side to win the Championship just two years after arriving at the club.

Webber has overseen drastic changes in the club's strategy from the academy upwards and has played a important role in the emergence of players such as James Maddison and Angus Gunn.

The publication reports that United executive vice-chairman Woodward is also looking to build a committee of ex-players to help with recruitment at the club.

It is claimed former players Darren Fletcher and Rio Ferdinand are being looked at for roles within that team, while Webber is being considered to oversee the operation.

Following United's recent struggles in the transfer market, it is believed that the club is looking to put an emphasis on signing younger players instead of the more expensive stars that have drawn criticism in recent campaigns.

Solskjaer already seems to be implementing that strategy, with the club expected to make Daniel James their first signing of the summer in a £15 million move from Swansea.
