Man Utd have six-man striker shortlist as Erik ten Hag 'obsessed' with Harry Kane

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has compiled a six-man transfer shortlist to replace Wout Weghorst this summer.

Weghorst, 30, has scored just two goals in 26 games for United since joining on loan from Championship winners Burnley in January. The Netherlands international's temporary deal expires at the end of the season, allowing Ten Hag to look for a replacement.

It's believed Harry Kane is at the top of Ten Hag's shortlist, with the England captain's contract at Tottenham due to expire in June 2024. The United boss is said to be 'obsessed' about Kane, 29, who has scored 25 Premier League goals for Spurs this season.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, United have decided against giving Weghorst a permanent deal. He was signed to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who left United by mutual consent in November and has since joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

Well-placed sources at Old Trafford have revealed Ten Hag is 'obsessed' with Kane... and for good reason. The experienced finisher has scored at least 24 goals per season for the last nine years.

Kane is United's preferred target, but Ten Hag is prepared to look elsewhere. The club will not be held to ransom by Tottenham chief Daniel Levy or be drawn into a lengthy transfer saga after missing out on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong last summer.

Who do you think Manchester United should sign this summer? Let us know in the comments below!

One of those other five targets is Victor Osimhen, 24, who has scored 22 league goals to fire Napoli to the Serie A title this season. Another is Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani, a 24-year-old France international with 21 goals to his name this campaign.

Joining Kane, Osimhen and Kolo Muani on Ten Hag's shortlist is Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund, who boasts a more modest record. The Danish star has scored 14 goals for Atalanta and former side Sturm Graz this season, but he's younger at just 20 years old.

The next name on Ten Hag's shortlist is Goncalo Ramos, who hit the headlines last year by hitting a hat-trick for Portugal in their 6-1 victory against Switzerland at the World Cup in Qatar. The 21-year-old has also impressed for Benfica this term, scoring 25 goals.

Last but by no means least is Mohammed Kudus, a player who Ten Hag knows well after signing him for Ajax in July 2020. The Ghana international, 22, scored a brace in a 3-2 win against South Korea at the World Cup in Qatar and has 18 club goals this campaign.

Kane, who turns 30 in July, is the oldest player on Ten Hag's transfer shortlist but could be the most realistic signing due to his situation at Spurs. He is England's record scorer and has made no secret of his desire to achieve the same feat in the Premier League.

Alan Shearer is the Premier League's record scorer with 260 goals, with Kane tally standing at 208. United, who won the Carabao Cup in February, are also more likely to win silverware than Tottenham. Kane has never won a major trophy with Spurs.
