Man Utd have funds for Jadon Sancho transfer but identify alternative as back-up

Manchester United do have the funds to pursue a move for Jadon Sancho this summer, but are considering alternatives.

The Red Devils have long been linked with the Borussia Dortmund star who has thrived since joining the German club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to strengthen his forward line despite the emergence of Mason Greenwood.

It was initially reported that United were not willing to pay more than £50m for Sancho, a player who is valued at almost double that by Dortmund.

But the Athletic understands that the Red Devils have set aside considerable amounts for the English winger - more than £50m.

Dortmund are thought to be sticking to their price tag for a player who will not be short of suitors.

Sancho though perfectly fits the profile of player Solskjaer wants to add and compliments the style he has implemented.

The Norwegian wants young, homegrown talent at Old Trafford and their capture of Harry Maguire last summer proves they can get expensive deals over the line.

Should Sancho prove too expensive however United have pinpointed an alternative in Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele.

The Frenchman, whose stock rose massively when he was at Dortmund, has not delivered since his £97m move to the Nou Camp.

Injuries haven't helped his cause, but Old Trafford chiefs see the 23-year-old as a cheaper option.

Dortmund want to have Sancho's future ironed out and have set an August 10 deadline for anyone looking to make a move.

But the Red Devils are relaxed about their timings with the transfer window potentially staying open until October 1.

United took their time to get the signings of Maguire and Bruno Fernandes over the line as they looked to negotiate the best deal.
