Man Utd handed double boost as Marcus Rashford steps up recovery from injury

Manchester United have been given a major boost with Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani both returning to training.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been without both forwards for the opening two Premier League games of the season.

Rashford returns to Carrington less than three weeks after going under the knife on a long-standing shoulder injury which affected his play at this summer’s European Championship.

There were fears that the 23-year-old could be out until October, but Solskjaer revealed last week that the operation had gone well.

He seemed very happy with the surgery," Solskjaer told Manchester United 's official website last week.

"He’s working in the gym, we see him every day so he’ll be chomping at the bit when it gets nearer to the time when he can come back."

He added: "Of course, any time you’re off with an injury is a hard time but it’s also time to reflect and find yourself again. That’s what we hope is going to happen to Marcus."

And it was all smiles for Rashford as he now targets a return after the first batch of international fixtures at the start of next month.

Cavani has been another absentee, with the Uruguayan handed an extended break to return home to see his family after the Copa America.

The veteran striker enjoyed an impressive first season in English football, but it didn’t come without its troubles with reports he was homesick and missing relatives.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic it had been two years since he had been able to return to Uruguay and it's understood that the chance to visit South America was a part of his contract negotiations.

But with a visit to Wolves on the horizon, the 34-year-old is back in training and could make his first appearance of the season at Molineux on Sunday.

The other big talking point surrounding United’s trip to the Black Country is whether Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane will make their full debuts.

Sancho has come off the bench in both games so far this season, but could be handed a start after the Red Devils failed to beat Southampton last time out.

Varane was an unused sub on the south coast having only completed a couple of training sessions following confirmation of his move from Real Madrid.

Solskjaer has spoken in glowing terms about the centre-back’s impact since he joined up with his new teammates: “He’s a quick, strong defender, good in the air, he can play with both feet.

“The short answer is everything about him is what you want. He’s been humble, he’s been inquisitive. He asks questions.

“He doesn’t want to learn by a mistake in the game, he wants to learn it on the training field before he comes on the pitch.

“Everything about him has been impressive.”
