Man Utd great Rio Ferdinand issues strong David de Gea message

Rio Ferdinand has insisted that David de Gea should remain as the Manchester United number one goalkeeper despite a mixed season.

De Gea made a poor error at Goodison Park at the weekend in the 1-1 draw against Everton in the Premier League.

It left some supporters wondering what the situation may be at United come the summer when Dean Henderson, who has impressed while on loan at Sheffield United, returns to Old Trafford.

Sergio Romero started for the club at Derby County in the fifth round of the FA Cup and Ferdinand was posed a question on the keeper situation pre-game during his stint on BT Sport.

But despite some inconsistent displays by De Gea, Ferdinand is adamant that the 29-year-old Spanish international is the main man for the job at the moment.

Asked if Romero was still the second best goalkeeper at United, Ferdinand told BT Sport: "Yes he is. I think David de Gea is the outright number one due to what he has done in the last four or five years.

"Yes, he's made some mistakes this season but when you've performed so well over those years, you deserve a little bit of leeway. That was a bad mistake (vs Everton).

"It's not a situation where you say, 'you're on the bench and Romero is in'. Not at all."
