Man Utd goalkeeper Dean Henderson makes admission after England U21s gaffe

Dean Henderson admitted he's gone from “hero to zero” after his England clanger.

The Manchester United keeper let a shot from Florinel Coman squirm through his legs to gift Romania the winner, as "under-achieving" England collapsed late on.

Henderson, who saved a penalty and was brilliant against France in the opening game, said: “You can go from hero to zero as quick as that. I am looking where I can do even before I have even caught it.

“I took my eye off the ball for a split second, it went under. You learn from it. You can pull up trees about it but I’m not going to do that. I know why I did it. These things happen.

“Going forward you just learn, but unfortunately they are things that go out there and people will question but it won’t change me as a person. I know where I am going. I won’t let it affect me.”

Henderson admitted the England dressing room was devastated and had “let the country down.”

“It is tough for everyone. No excuses. With the group of players we have really under-achieved. We wanted to come here and win this tournament.

"Whoever goes on to win the tournament realistically we know we can beat as well. It is a shame. We have let ourselves down. We have let the country down.”

England boss Aidy Boothroyd has insisted he will stay on despite the defeat to Romania.

Boothroyd, who got a two year deal before the tournament, was asked if he could leave the post after such a flop.

He said: “I am surprised by the question. I am not going anywhere. They will have to carry me out.

“It is not reflection on should I stay or go, but reflection on what we have achieved and what we could have done better.

“It is important to have a proper debrief about it. We have to pick the bones out of it. If we are going to win a tournament like this there are things we have to improve on.
