Manchester United have been handed an injury boost after scans revealed Marcus Rashford’s ankle injury is not as serious as first feared.
The striker was forced off the pitch following a collision with Riyad Mahrez in United’s 2-0 Manchester derby victory over rivals City.
A first-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw’s second half strike handed United the initiative at the Etihad as they looked to close the gap at the top of the table.
As the league leaders tried to fight their way back into the game, Rashford was forced into defensive duty as he chased down a City attack in the 70th minute.
A coming together with Mahrez sent the player to ground, requiring lengthy treatment before limping off.
“When he sprinted 70 yards to save a goal, it showed the attitude of the boy,” commented Solskjaer afterwards.
“I think he went over on his ankle but we need to do a scan, I’ve not had time to speak to the doctor yet.”
There were initial fears that Rashford had suffered ligament damage but those fears have reportedly been played down.
However, according to the Telegraph , the England forward could still face a spell on the sidelines.
Rashford is said to be having trouble putting weight on the injured left ankle and suffering from “swelling and bruising”.
It’s unclear how long the 23-year-old is expected to be out of action but he is unlikely to feature in his side’s Europa League last-16 clash with AC Milan at Old Trafford this week.
Rashford, who has played in all 43 of United’s matches this season, was already nursing a shoulder injury having suffered a tear during United’s draw with Arsenal at the Emirates in January.
