Man Utd forward Alexis Sanchez set for scan amid fresh fears over knee injury

Alexis Sanchez will undergo scans on Sunday amid fears the Manchester United striker has suffered fresh knee ligament damage.

The Chilean broke down after 52 minutes of United’s 3-2 win against Southampton after twisting his knee and falling awkwardly.

United’s medical staff were not able to give a definitive prognosis in the immediate aftermath of the game – but the concern is Sanchez has suffered his second knee ligament injury of the season.

The 30-year-old has only recently returned from a six-week absence after sustaining ligament damage in training in November.

He has struggled to hold down a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side since returning to fitness, and faces another spell on the sidelines.

“We will do a scan tomorrow,” said United’ interim manager Solskjaer. “We think it might be the ligaments. Hopefully it will not be too bad.”

Sanchez has added to a growing injury crisis at United ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie with Paris Saint Germain.

Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Phil Jones and Antonio Valencia are also out.

United hope Martial will be back for the game against the French giants, following a groin injury, but they will also be without the suspended Paul Pogba.
