Man Utd fans react to Louis van Gaal advising Matthijs de Ligt to join Man City

Manchester United fans are in agreement with former boss Louis van Gaal regarding his comments about Matthijs de Ligt.

Van Gaal spoke out about the young Holland international's future now that he is being linked with the biggest clubs on the planted.

Van Gaal suggested a move to either Juventus or Barcelona would be best for the Ajax centre-back, before claiming Manchester City would be the only Premier League club he'd advise him to sign for.

"De Ligt at Juventus? I think De Ligt can play in any competition," Van Gaal told Ziggo Sport.

"In Italy they are the masters of defense, so he can best develop there. If I had the chance I would go to Barcelona.

Louis van Gaal advises Matthijs de Ligt to join Man Utd's rivals

"They have central defenders who are not too good, so he will play there. Or I would go to Manchester City.

"I don't think the central defenders are that great either, so he'll play there too."

The Dutchman didn't say he shouldn't sign for Manchester United, but he didn't say he should either - an omission that could have upset Red Devils supporters.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces difficult choices as Man Utd aim to get back on track

But surprisingly Manchester United fans are, for the most part, in full agreement with their former boss.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, one United fan said: "Why would someone with that much potential choose to play with [Chris] Smalling and [Phil] Jones rather than play for a side challenging for the quadruple? Nothing bitter about this at all."

Jake Humphrey hits back at Martin Keown after he threatens to 'put him away'

"It is time we all admit that there is no defined playing style in our team. That won't help De Ligt's development.

"Man United are the worst run football club when it comes to on-the-pitch matters."
