Man Utd fans fall onto pitch as advertising hoardings collapse as they celebrate goal

Manchester United fans fell onto the pitch after the hoardings collapsed as they celebrated their side's third goal against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night.

Red Devils players ran towards the away end of the City Ground after Bruno Fernandes sealed the victory and put United very much in the driving seat of their two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against the Tricky Trees.

The Man United players stood in front of the away end to celebrate in a group as jubilant fans leaned towards the advertising hoardings. Then, without warning, the board suddenly fell forward, with a number of supporters tumbling onto the pitch.

Fortunately, no one appeared to be hurt, as the United players quickly moved away from the fans to allow stewards and police to step in and help people to their feet.

Within minutes the fans were back in place and the advertising board was replaced. Police and stewards then remained in a line in front of the away fans to prevent the incident from recurring.

Gary Neville on commentary for Sky Sports said: "It was an unpleasant watch that for a moment or two, but it looks like everybody's okay over in that corner. They're putting the advertising board back."

He added: "There's a hoarding that's just collapsed there at the bottom, they need to be careful.

"Pellestri makes the run, they half clear it and it's Elanga who scoops it into the path of Fernandes. We're right behind it - he plays the pass initially, Bruno Fernandes, and he just follows it up. [Lewis] O'Brien doesn't go with him and he controls the strike - it's low, it's hard, it's emphatic, and it looks like it's going to send Manchester United to Wembley."

United went ahead in their first-leg clash with Forest through Marcus Rashford after just six minutes, with the in-form striker firing home after a mazy run.

Forest thought they had equalised through Sam Surridge, who fired home for his side, but a VAR check revealed the forward had fractionally strayed into an offside position.

Wout Weghorst doubled Man United's advantage just before the break with his first goal for his new side following his loan move from Burnley.

And Fernandes secured the win on the night in 89 minutes, putting the Red Devils into an incredibly commanding position going into the second leg of the semi-final at Old Trafford.

Should United qualify, Erik ten Hag's side will face either Newcastle or Southampton in the Carabao Cup final, with the Magpies winning the first leg of their semi-final 1-0 on Tuesday.
