Manchester United could be pipped to Mauricio Pochettino's signature by Real Madrid, it's been claimed.
The Red Devils are long-term admirers of the out-of-work Argentine, who was relieved of his duties as Tottenham manager last November.
United tried to appoint Pochettino as their chief following Jose Mourinho's dismissal in December 2018 but ended up giving the job to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The United brass' eagerness to install the former Southampton manager at the Old Trafford helm hasn't waned, despite Solskjaer guiding the club back to the Champions League last season.
But they could end up losing the race for his services to Spanish champions Real Madrid.
According to Marca , Los Blancos have identified Pochettino as the man they want to replace the under-pressure Zinedine Zidane.
Real president Florentino Perez is said to be a big admirer of the 48-year-old, whose management and playing styles has drawn plaudits from many.
Perez is also said to be contemplating appointing Real's second all-time leading goalscorer, Raul, as Zidane's successor.
Pochettino, 48, has been out of work since he was sacked by Tottenham last November and is itching to get back in the dugout.
"I always feel ready to get back involved in the game," Pochettino said during a recent appearance on Sky Sports. "I love football, it’s my job.
“It’s not a stress when you are working, it’s not a stress to go into the training ground, it’s not a stress to prepare the game, it’s not a stress to compete.
“My hair is long, look. I hope to cut it when we start working again to work.
“I am looking forward again to being involved in the game.”
