Man Utd face battle to keep hold of rising academy star amid uncertainty over future

Manchester United will need to fend off interest from Premier League rivals if they are to keep their latest academy prospect, according to reports.

Iestyn Hughes has enjoyed a breakout season in the Under-18 Premier League to earn himself suitors in England and further afield.

The 18-year-old right-back has made 12 appearances in the division, picking up one assist, and he was named on the bench for the Under-23s in Premier League 2 last month.

Hughes represents Wales at Under-19 level and national team staff recently received enquiries from numerous Premier League clubs regarding the youngster, who is out of contract this summer.

That's according to The Athletic , which adds teams in Germany are also keen on the teenage defender.

Hughes will be available on a free transfer this summer with no compensation to be paid to United if they do not table a new contract.

The Welshman was due to link up with his Under-19 colleagues for internationals later this month - including a game against England - but UEFA cancelled the fixtures due to the pandemic.

Hughes became a first-year scholar at United's Carrington base in July 2019 after making three appearances for the Under-18s earlier that year.

The Red Devils' website describes him as "a defender who likes to get forward and produce crosses into the box".

A natural right-back, Hughes has also filled in on the left and at the centre of defence at times.

The Merthyr Tydfil-born starlet now faces a decision over where to commit his future as he sets his sights on first-team action one day.

While fellow teenagers Amad and Shola Shoretire recently made their senior debuts, Hughes is believed to be some way off breaking into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reckoning.
