Man Utd eye Portuguese midfielder to fill Marouane Fellaini void

Manchester United have made signing a goalscoring midfielder their priority this summer - and Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes is reportedly top of their wish list.

Caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to be handed the reins on a full-time basis and is already looking at potential new signings.

The Norwegian is keen to add to his midfield ranks after seeing Marouane Fellaini leave the club for the Chinese Super League last month.

Solskjaer feels that he needs to add depth to his midfield ranks that is short on numbers beyond Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera.

And the London Evening Standard have claimed United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is already looking at potential targets.

Fernandes fits their criteria, having enjoyed a sensational season with the Portuguese giants.

The Portugal international has emerged as a goalscoring midfielder for Sporting, netting 13 goals and 10 assists in 25 league games this season.

United have seemingly cooled their interest in Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic, allowing them to move forward in their pursuit of Fernandes.

The club are still keen on Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho and Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, but a midfielder is their No.1 priority.

Meanwhile, Herrera is set to pen a new deal with the club while Juan Mata, whose current contract expires this summer, is yet to agree on an extended stay.
