Man Utd drop huge gaffe as new Schmeichel-inspired keeper kit is from WRONG year

Manchester United appear to have dropped a huge gaffe in releasing their new goalkeeper kit ahead of next season.

David De Gea was pictured in promotional images circulated by the club this morning in the kit which is supposedly a nod to the one Peter Schmeichel wore in the Treble-winning season of 1998-99.

But the two-tone purple kit carries no likeness to the bright green jersey worn by the Great Dane as he helped the Red Devils to Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League glory 20 years ago.

It bears more resemblance to the shirt worn by Schmeichel in the 1996-67 campaign, in which United won the Premier League but were knocked out of Europe by Borussia Dortmund at the semi-final stage.

Man Utd unveil new 2019/20 home kit - with nod to legendary Treble winners

United said on their website: "The home goalkeeper jersey has a tiger pattern featuring a dark purple two-tone design, inspired by the top worn by our legendary No1, Peter Schmeichel, during the 1998/99 season."

Schmeichel was in goal on that famous night in Barcelona in 1999 as United scored twice in stoppage time to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Bayern Munich.

Teddy Sheringham and current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer found the net to secure a historic Treble for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Next season's home kit features a nod to the treble winners, with the numbers '91' and '93' - the minutes in which the goals were scored - printed on either arm.

The dates of the three title wins are also shown on the bottom of the shirt.
