Man Utd defender Luke Shaw trolls Romelu Lukaku after Inter Milan's Champions League exit: 'Welcome back'

Luke Shaw has taken to social media to poke fun at former Manchester United team-mate Romelu Lukaku following Inter Milan's elimination from the Champions League.

Antonio Conte's Nerazzurri were consigned to the Europa League on Tuesday night, with Lukaku's 25-yard first-half strike not enough to avoid a 2-1 home defeat by already-qualified Barcelona - who now boast the youngest goalscorer in competition history following a late winner from 17-year-old Ansu Fati - that left them third behind Borussia Dortmund in Group F.

It was a major disappointment for Inter, who are enjoying a strong domestic campaign and currently look a real contender to end Juventus' dominance of Serie A, sitting two points clear at the summit after 15 rounds of matches.

Lukaku has been key to that effort, scoring 12 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions since swapping Old Trafford for the San Siro in a £73million deal in August.

Shaw could not resist a dig at his former United colleague following Inter's exit, quote-tweeting a Lukaku post from October that showed the striker happy in training beneath the caption "UCL" with a simple: "Welcome back".

The pair were team-mates for two seasons at United, though Lukaku seemed to annoy Shaw back in early August with a Twitter video that appeared to show United training data from a pre-season sprint session, with the left-back last on the list before claiming that he was only instructed to operate at 70 per cent.

While Inter will now enter the knockout stages of the Europa League, 2016/17 winners United began the year back in the competition after finishing sixth in the Premier League last term.

Already qualified for the round of 32, they conclude their group-stage campaign against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar at Old Trafford on Thursday and need only a point to seal top spot in Group L.
