Man Utd dealt massive transfer blow in race for Portuguese star

Manchester United face paying up to €100m (£88m) for Portuguese star Ruben Dias with his release clause set to almost double.

The centre-back is reportedly one of three targets from Portugal for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, alongside team-mate Joao Felix and Sporting captain Bruno Fernandes.

But according to A Bola , Dias is on the verge of penning a new contract at Benfica which would substantially increase his wages and protect his value.

The new deal would see clubs required to pay €100m to trigger his new release clause, a huge rise from the €60m release clause included in his current deal.

Reports from Portugal last month suggested United have already opened negotiations over the 22-year-old, although Juventus are also keen.

Dias has enjoyed an impressive campaign and will now link up with Portugal for their Nations League action with his contract situation ongoing.

Central defence remains a priority for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his summer rebuild.

Napoli seem unwilling to sell Kalidou Koulibaly, whilst Milan Skriniar is staying put at Inter Milan and Matthijs De Ligt is tipped to join Barcelona .

The Red Devils are preparing to try and outbid the Catalan club for the Ajax youngster, but if they miss out they now face a huge fee to land Dias instead.

They have been linked with a double swoop from Benfica, also snapping up wonderkid Felix.

But they face competition from around Europe for the in-demand Felix after his stunning breakthrough season.
