Man Utd 'dealt blow in Ivan Rakitic transfer pursuit' as Atletico Madrid join race

Man Utd have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic .

The Red Devils are eyeing a swoop for the Croatian, whose contract at the Nou Camp expires in the summer of 2021.

Marca report that Atletico Madrid have joined the race for Rakitic's services, and his representatives have already held discussions over a move.

United have maintained an interest in the 31-year-old for some time, but now look likely to be trumped by Atletico.

Rakitic is said to favour staying in Spain, rather than a switch to England, which puts Atletico in pole position for his signature.

The La Liga giants are believed to have approached Rakitic at the end of last season, and have now signalled their intentions to renew hopes of a deal.

Rakitic has reportedly looked at properties in Madrid, along with his family, and is keen on joining Barca's rivals.

One sticking point could be whether Atletico change the terms of the current agreement proposed with Rakitic.

PSG and Juventus are also among the clubs to have shown an interest in Rakitic previously, which could result in a bidding war come this summer if Atletico do not keep up with their side of the bargain.

Meanwhile as one door closes for United, another potentially opens, as according to a report from Goal , Tottenham's Harry Kane would consider a move to Old Trafford.

Spurs are going through a rebuilding process under ex-United boss Jose Mourinho, and Kane - who is yet to win a trophy with the north London club - is said to be open to a move elsewhere.

The prospect of joining United, who are seemingly on the rise, appeals to Kane, though Spurs would no doubt drive up the price for their talisman should he wish to leave the club.
