Man Utd 'consider Kalvin Phillips transfer' after coaches watch Leeds sensation

Manchester United are considering a transfer swoop for Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's most trusted coaching staff watched him recently.

Defensive midfielder Phillips has started all 14 of Leeds' Championship matches so far as the Yorkshire club sit third in the table.

The 23-year-old recently signed a new deal committing to Leeds until 2024 but may be allowed to leave if the club do not win promotion this season.

Solskjaer's No2 Mike Phelan was at Elland Road to watch £10million-rated Phillips in Leeds' 1-0 win over Birmingham last weekend, according to the Sun .

And the publication reports that first-team coach Kieran McKenna followed that up by watching Phillips in the 1-1 draw at Preston a few days later.

Leeds rejected a bid from Tottenham for the midfielder earlier this year.

According to The Athletic, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa had been assured Phillips would stay when he signed up for his second season at the club - so the club made it clear to suitors that the midfielder was not for sale.

However, if Leeds were to fail to win promotion again this year, they might find it more difficult to hold on to their man in the face of increasing interest from Premier League clubs.

Aston Villa, Sheffield United, Wolves and Burnley are all believed to be keen on Phillips, who has a goal and an assist so far this season - but United could trump them all if they come in for him.

Meanwhile, United are set for a over Rochdale's £10million-rated teenage sensation Luke Matheson.

Matheson, who turned 17 this month, made United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sit up and take notice when he scored against the Red Devils in their Carabao Cup clash at Old Trafford last month.

Pep Guardiola is also believed to be a fan of the England under-18 defender - and now Rochdale are braced for January scramble for Matheson, with United and City heading a queue of Premier League clubs interested in signing him.
