Man Utd 'consider Edinson Cavani summer transfer' if Atletico Madrid move collapses

Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Edinson Cavani.

Paris Saint-Germain's Cavani has been linked with an exit this month after playing second fiddle to Kylian Mbappe and Mauro Icardi for the majority of the campaign.

United and Chelsea have been keeping tabs on his situation but it has been widely reported that Cavani, who is out of contract in the summer, would prefer a move to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

And L’Equipe has claimed that Diego Simeone’s side are preparing an offer of €18million (£15m) plus add ons for the Uruguay superstar.

Atletico's earlier proposal of €15m was turned down by the Ligue 1 champions and the Spaniards have made it clear that the latest bid is their final offer.

And so, should Atletico and PSG fail to agree terms, Cavani would be free to assess his options when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season.

United, is is claimed, are understood to be interested in signing the 32-year-old forward and would be able to offer him a huge salary.

What has become clear, though, is that Cavani is almost certain to leave the club - either before Friday's transfer deadline or in the summer.

The Uruguayan will be remembered fondly by supporters at Parc de Princes following a hugely successful seven-and-a-half years.

Cavani scored 198 goals in 292 games to become the club's all-time leading scorer, and also helped them win five Ligue 1 titles in a row, as well as four Coupe de Frances.

He may regret his side's failures in the Champions League, however, as they never progressed past the quarter-final stage while he was in Paris.
