Man Utd 'consider Darren Fletcher for Old Trafford return' in recruitment role

Former Old Trafford favourite Darren Fletcher has reportedly been in talks over return to Manchester United .

Fletcher, 35, is out of contract at Stoke this summer and is expected to hang up his boots.

The Scot's last appearance came off the bench against Derby a month ago and he hasn't even made the bench in recent weeks.

He could return to United to work within a new recruitment structure at Old Trafford, reports the Telegraph.

The Red Devils are set to bring in a sporting director this summer, with Fletcher possibly working alongside Mike Phelan.

It is suggested Fletcher would be involved in identifying new talent, while having a major influence on the scouting market.

Fletcher is said to be considering his options at the end of the season, although he has reportedly held talks over a return to his ex-club.

The midfielder came through the ranks at United and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club.

He suffered from ulcerative colitis in 2011 and announced he would be taking an extended break from football on medical advice.

Fletcher later returned in 2013 and helped win his fifth Premier League title at Old Trafford.

Fletcher joined West Brom in 2015 and was immediately made captain by boss Tony Pulis. He spent two years at the Hawthorns before his move to Stoke.

Speaking earlier this month, he highlighted the importance of United making the top four.

“It’s massive for everything to do with the club. It’s massive to do with recruitment in the summer, it’s massive to attract new players and things like that," he said.

"The players want to be playing in the Champions League. That’s where the club belongs."
