Man Utd confirm Angel Gomes departure after rejection of new contract

Manchester United have confirmed that Angel Gomes will leave the club after rejecting the offer of a new deal.

The teenager is highly thought of at Old Trafford and they had tabled several offers in an effort to retain his services.

But Gomes, who has been in the club's academy from a young age, will seek pastures new.

The 19-year-old became the first player born in the 2000s to appear for United when he played in the final game of the 2016/17 season against Crystal Palace.

His departure will come as a blow to United who have made a conscious effort to give academy talent more of an opportunity, although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had expected his exit.

Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams have both enjoyed breakthrough seasons under the Norwegian.

Nicky Butt, who is head of United's academy stars, previously spoke very highly of Gomes and his prospects in the first team.

“First and foremost, he’s one of our boys and one we’ve had for a while and a very talented young man,” Butt told MUTV in 2017.

“We’ve got quite a few talented boys in the set up who we’re very excited about and Angel is one of them.

"To get him tied up to a long-term contract is really good for our club and it just shows the direction we’re moving in within the Academy.

“He has big a future, but he still has a long way to go,” continued Butt. “It’s not a case of signing the contract and going straight into the first team."

Gomes had made six appearances this term with three of those coming as a starter.
