Man Utd coach's unfortunate David de Gea revelation before Barcelona clash

Lionel Messi is a good enough footballer to score goals on his own, he doesn't really need any help.

But sadly for David de Gea, help is exactly what he got at the Nou Camp on Tuesday evening.

Barcelona were already 1-0 up in their Champions League quarter-final second leg tie thanks to a goal from, yep you guessed it, Messi, when the Argentinean took aim from distance and looked to add to his tally.

It wasn't that great a shot though, and the No.10 perhaps even considered turning around in disgust as he saw De Gea get down to smother the ball.

But then... oh no.

De Gea let the ball slip through his hands and it rolled into the net, leading many to revisit the quotes from United goalkeeping coach Emilio Alvarez before the match.

Yes, David de Gea's 'super special' preparations for facing Lionel Messi .

"Those who know David well can tell you one of his virtues is his ability to block everything out, he is very strong mentally," Alvarez - the only member of United's staff left over from Jose Mourinho's days - told Cadena SER .

"We do something different when facing Messi .

"With De Gea we have worked on some more specific work, there are some extras compared to other games with having Leo up front.

David de Gea's 'super special' preparations for facing Lionel Messi

"I wouldn't lie if I said we do a super special preparation. I worked in La Liga for many years with David as well and before with other keepers.

"I can't deny that there is a particularity regarding Leo. In the end, you try to offer tools and data to the keeper so that it can help him."

Hmmm...

Maybe try and bit harder next time.
