Man Utd coach picks two youngster to make first team breakthrough

Manchester United coach Nicky Butt has picked out Angel Gomes and Mason Greenwood as the two players primed to make their first team breakthrough this season.

Butt, a member of the famed Class of '92, switched his role as head of the United academy for the head of first team development position this summer.

He is now playing a bigger part than ever in providing a pathway for players from the youth ranks into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first team.

Both Greenwood and Gomes impressed on United's pre-season tour and look set to feature in Solskjaer's squad moving forwards.

And Butt has highlighted the attributes which make him believe they are ready to make a positive impact.

"I think it's unfair to settle on one," Butt said when asked which young player excites him most and has the biggest potential in a feature for Super 6.

"I think Gomes could set alight this season and do really well, he's matured and got a lot stronger.

"Purely for the excitement and the fans I think Greenwood is going to be a real, real superstar if he keeps his feet on the ground, he's patient and he scores the goals that he can.

"He's both footed, he's a big, strong, powereful kid who can score goals and he's still very much a young boy who's likeable."

Greenwood is in United's matchday squad to take on Wolves tonight (Monday).

The teenage frontman came on as a late substitute in their 4-0 win over Chelsea in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford last week.
