Man Utd 'close in' on three transfers but face competition for Thomas Muller

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on three signings in the January transfer window - but they face competition for Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperately needs to improve his squad with United currently 14th in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone.

United ended a winless run of 11 away matches when they beat Partizan Belgrade 1-0 in their Europa League clash in Serbia on Thursday, to go top of Group L.

But they have a long way to go to compete at the top end of the Premier League again, and are reported to have targeted Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Muller and Denis Zakaria in January.

United are ready to pay 50million euros (£43m) for Muller , according to Bild , but the German publication reports they face competition from Inter Milan for the Munich forward.

The irony for United is that Inter are looking to cover an injury to Alexis Sanchez, who joined them on loan from the Red Devils this summer but is currently out with an ankle injury and is not expected back until Christmas at the earliest.

Muller, 30, has a contract with Bayern until 2021, but could be allowed to leave the club early following Philippe Coutinho's arrival on loan from Barcelona .

Bild also reports that United are closing in on a deal for Borussia Moenchengladbach midfielder Zakaria.

The 22-year-old has 24 caps for Switzerland and is contracted to Moenchengladbach until 2022, but could be available for around £25m.

And United appear to be close to signing out-of-favour Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic, with some reports claiming a deal has already been agreed .

Former United midfielder Scholes reckons United need at least "two or three" new signings to make them competitive - with attacking players particularly in need.

Scholes said: "I think it's all in the forward areas. Not having a recognised number nine is a problem, maybe a creative player like a number ten as well."
