Man Utd change Mason Greenwood contract plans amid 'concerns' over 'outside activities'

Manchester United are reportedly concerned about Mason Greenwood's 'outside activities' after the striker missed Saturday's trip to Everton through illness.

The 19-year-old was not likely to start the clash at Goodison Park anyway, as United bosses were said to have been unimpressed by his performance in training the day prior.

United had only returned to the UK in the early hours of Friday morning, but Greenwood's laboured display at Carrington has led to fears the youngster is not getting enough sleep, which is having a knock-on impact to his health in general.

The Athletic report that figures at United are now worried Greenwood is not showing the correct discipline or making the necessary sacrifices needed to make the most of his ability.

Greenwood has already been under considerable pressure this season after he and Man City's Phil Foden were sent home from England duty in September for inviting Icelandic girls to the team hotel in a clear breach of Covid-19 protocol.

According to The Athletic's report, United are now asking questions about Greenwood's affairs outside of the club.

They feel he is not getting enough rest away from training and may not be adhering to the stricter guidelines imposed on first-team stars with regards to keeping within a limited social bubble.

While Foden has worked his way back into the England squad, Greenwood has been left out of Gareth Southgate's selection for the three fixtures taking place over this international break.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is even thought to have held a telephone conversation with the Three Lions boss, during which he insisted it would be best for Greenwood to sit this one out.

Greenwood has been used sparingly by United so far this season - largely to keep him out of the limelight after the Iceland debacle, as well as him missing two fixtures due to issues relating to injury and illness.

His goal against Red Bull Leipzig offered a fresh glimpse of the talent he possesses, but harnessing his dedication will be crucial to him succeeding.

Solskjaer is hoping the arrival of the experienced Edinson Cavani may help to rub off on Greenwood and set an example for him to follow if he wishes to fulfil his extreme potential at Old Trafford.

Greenwood was in line for a new contract following his impressive breakthrough season, but United have put those plans back on ice for now.
