Man Utd boss Solskjaer issues Harry Maguire injury update after Man City absence

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed more bad news on Harry Maguire after the centre-half missed Manchester United's Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City .

Maguire failed a late fitness test ahead of the 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford after suffering a foot injury in Saturday's 0-0 FA Cup draw at Wolves .

The £80million summer signing had travelled with the squad to their Lowry Hotel base, with United hoping he would be fit enough to feature, but Maguire was missed at the heart of defence as City ran riot in the first half.

Now Red Devils boss Solskjaer has confirmed that the 26-year-old will also be absent for Saturday's Premier League clash at home to Norwich City.

However, the manager said Maguire would not be out long-term with the injury, according to the BBC.

Maguire's place was taken on Tuesday by Phil Jones, whose previous start had come in a disastrous performance at Sheffield United in late November when he was taken off at half-time.

Other defensive options Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe are all currently injured, with none of them expected back until later in the month.

Meanwhile, United centre-back Chris Smalling has impressed on loan at Roma, and the defender has been linked with a permanent switch to the Serie A club where his displays have made him a fan favourite.

Asked about the defender's omission, Solskjaer told MUTV : “No he couldn’t make it, so there is no point trying to make things worse. He was trying to the end, but he wasn’t ready, no.”

Maguire tweeted: "Disappointed to miss out through injury — let’s get right behind the lads."
