Man Utd anger fans with message to Romelu Lukaku after Cardiff defeat

Manchester United have been criticised for an Instagram post 'celebrating' Romelu Lukaku's goal return.

The Belgian striker endured a difficult second season at Old Trafford, scoring 15 times in all competitions.

Lukaku wasn't involved against Cardiff on the final day due to a hamstring problem but watched from the stands as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men were beaten 2-0.

Lukaku turned 26th on Monday and United sent their birthday wishes to the striker on Instagram .

The club also uploaded a video tribute to the former Everton striker, congratulating him on the 28 Premier League goals he has managed since his arrival in the summer of 2017.

Big debate: The one transfer Man Utd need to make to get back into top four

But the post didn't go down well among United fans, who suggested the achievement was not one worth celebraring.

"So that's like 14 goals in a season since he's been here for 2 years - wow and that's a 90 mil striker," one user responded on Instagram.

Another reply read: "We need a striker with 28 league goals in a single season!!"

The criticism of Lukaku continued: "Hired to score goals. This number is shameful."

How Man Utd could line up next season after ruthless summer overhaul of squad

Lukaku could be among those to make way this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plots an overhaul of his squad.

He admitted last month that he didn't know where his future lies with Inter Milan keeping an eye on the situation.

When asked about his future after the Chelsea game he said: "Me? I don't know, I'm not here to entertain rumours. I'm still under contract."
