Man Utd and Arsenal interest in Miguel Almiron transfer laid bare by agent

Miguel Almiron ’s agent has claimed that both Manchester United and Arsenal previously held an interest in his client amid his stunning form for Newcastle this season.

The Paraguayan has arguably been one of the standout performers in the Premier League ahead of the World Cup. He already has seven league goals to his name so far - by far and away the most prolific season of his Magpies career since a then club record move from MLS outfit Atlanta United back in 2018.

Almiron’s form has seen him earn a nomination for the Premier League player of the month for October, whilst it has also lifted Newcastle to the lofty heights of fourth in the table under Eddie Howe.

It could have been hugely different for the winger though, as his agent Daniel Campos has confirmed both Arsenal and United had their eyes on him in the past.

Speaking with ABC Cardinal, he said: "Miguel Almiron is a footballer who went from less to more, now he is a more complete footballer. There was interest shown by Manchester United in Miguel but they never made an offer. Arsenal and Southampton offered loan deals for him but we did not want it to be a loan."

Whilst the 28-year-old seems comfortable at St James’ Park, there may be a decision to make over his future sooner rather than later.

His contract at Newcastle expires in the summer of 2024 and reports recently suggested that talks had been opened over an extended stay. However, Magpies boss Eddie Howe quickly dismissed those claims.

“No, I don’t know where that story has come from,” he said. “I’ve said every week how much I love and respect Miggy but I don’t think any conversations have started between the club or his representatives.

“At the moment, we’re in a busy spell of games. All conversations on contract and futures will take place at a later date.”

Almiron will no doubt be attempting to extend his excellent recent run before the Premier League takes a break for the upcoming World Cup. Newcastle take on Southampton on Sunday before clashing with league rivals Crystal Palace in the third round of the Carabao Cup next week. Their domestic commitments are rounded off against Chelsea next weekend.

Almiron will not be attending the World Cup due to Paraguay failing to qualify for the tournament. They finished eighth in their CONMEBOL qualifying group having won just three of their 18 matches.

The Newcastle star scored just one goal for his nation during their qualifying campaign.
