Man Utd agree transfer for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane subject to medical

Manchester United have agreed a transfer with Raphael Varane subject to a medical.

The Red Devils will pay around £40million for the Real Madrid centre-back, who is set to sign a long-term contract with the Old Trafford club, worth £250,000-a-week.

Manchester United have been in hot pursuit of the Real Madrid centre-back all summer but prioritised signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for £73million.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Red Devils confirmed on Tuesday night they have reached an agreement with Varane.

A post on the club's official website read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner, Raphael Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalised."

Manchester United swooped for Varane after contract extension talks between the defender and Real Madrid came to a standstill.

Varane is out of contract at Real Madrid next summer meaning he could leave for free.

Los Blancos are keen to receive a transfer fee for the centre-back, which prompted them to sanction the sale.

Real Madrid posted their own short statement shortly after Man United announced the news on Tuesday night.

"Real Madrid wants to show all its love to Raphael Varane and his family, we wish him good luck for the next step of his professional career," read the statement.

"We are thankful for his professionalism and the exemplary behaviour he has shown for the ten years he has worn our shirt, in which time he has won 18 titles: four Champions Leagues, four Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, three La Ligas, one Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups."
