Man Utd agree Daniel James transfer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lands first signing

Daniel James has become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing as Manchester United manager.

Welsh winger James passed his medical on Thursday and will be officially confirmed by the Red Devils on June 11 when the transfer window opens.

James, who had a botched deadline day move to Leeds United in January, has joined United for £15million, plus a potential £3m in add ons, from Swansea City.

Monaco had made a late move for the Welshman while there was also interest from  Everton and Leicester City, but he had his heart set on a move to United.

The Premier League club confirmed: "We're delighted to have agreed terms, in principle, with Swansea City for the transfer of Daniel James to MUFC."

Wales boss Ryan Giggs has backed James to be a hit at his old club United after the pacy starlet shot to prominence in the Championship this term.

Giggs said: “If it happens, United are getting an exciting player that I know that Man United fans will get behind and enjoy watching him.

“It's fantastic for everyone, for Dan, for Manchester United and a good deal for Swansea City as well.

“I would say enjoy it, it's the biggest club in the world so enjoy the challenge.

“He's potentially going there because of what he's done over the last year or so, especially the last six months.

“Be yourself, don’t be anyone else, and you’ll be fine.”

James is unlikely to be the last new face at Old Trafford this summer, with Solskjaer expected to make a raft of changes following a disappointing campiagn.

A centre back is high on his priority list, with Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng and in demand Ajax wonder kid Matthjis de Ligt all linked with a move to United.

The likes of Adrien Rabiot, Thomas Meunier, Joao Felix, Bruno Fernandes and Sebastien Haller's names have also been mooted as targets in recent weeks.

Solskajer's first signing follows in the footsteps of his predecessors Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, David Moyes and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mourinho's first recruit was Eric Bailly from Villarreal, while van Gaal's spree began with Ander Herrera - who is joining Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Moyes struggled to recruit in his only summer at the Red Devils, with Marouane Fellaini his only high profile signing, but Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varera was the first through the door.

Meanwhile, legendary boss Ferguson splashed a healthy £250,000 to lure Viv Anderson from Arsenal in 1987.
