Man Utd 2020/21 transfers graded - Edinson Cavani passes as Donny van de Beek struggles

Manchester United will perhaps look back on this season with some regrets after failing to win silverware for the fourth consecutive campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side had reached the Europa League final and finished second in the Premier League - their highest league finish in three years.

But their chances of ending their short trophy drought were dashed after a 11-10 penalty shootout defeat to Villarreal in Gdansk, having drawn 1-1 in normal and extra-time, to hand Unai Emery a fourth Europa League title in eight years.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has assembled a squad with a youthful exuberance and thirst for success but the Red Devils fell short at the final hurdle.

The Norwegian has recruited wisely in the transfer market in previous season, with the £47.5 million capture of Bruno Fernandes 17 months ago proving to be outstanding business.

That meant the Man United boss only needed to top up his squad in certain areas such as central midfield, bringing in Donny van de Beek from Ajax as well as landing experienced striker Edinson Cavani on a free transfer after his release from Paris Saint-Germain.

No manager can say that every transfer they make is a success, however, and Solskjaer may be looking at his squad with the opinion that it could do with another overhaul, especially after their Europa League defeat.

So, which signings stand out from the rest of the pack? Mirror Sport rates Man United's best and worst transfer dealings from the summer of 2020/21...

Edinson Cavani: A-

As a striker himself in his playing career, Solskjaer will surely appreciate Cavani’s contributions for United this season after joining on a free transfer from PSG.

The 34-year-old has penned a one-year extension after impressing in his debut season in England, scoring 15 goals in 37 appearances and turning games around with cameos from the bench.

Highlights of his Red Devils career include a braces against Roma and Southampton and he showed his natural instinct as a poacher to equalise for Man United in Thursday's final.

Having started the final and looking at his record of nine goals in his last 10 games, it suggests he will play a key part for United in 2021/22.

Amad: C

The Ivorian starlet only officially completed his move to Manchester in January after being snapped up from Atalanta for a fee potentially rising to £37m.

It would therefore be unrealistic to expect the teenager to slot straight into the first-team squad immediately and that is why he has spent time with the club's development squad, aside from a handful of substitute appearances.

There is enough about the 18-year-old to suggest he could be a star in the making, having set up Mason Greenwood’s goal on his Premier League debut against Leicester on May 11 and wowing youth coaches at the club.

But he will need time to adjust and develop at youth level before gracing the stage of Old Trafford on a weekly basis.

Alex Telles: D+

The Brazilian has featured 23 times since he was signed from Porto but is yet to nail down a regular spot at left-back due to the resurgence of Luke Shaw.

It has been suggested Telles has struggled to acclimatise to life in England and that the 28-year-old could be heading to Juventus this summer.

But it seems unlikely Solskjaer will be willing to allow the full-back to leave without bringing in a replacement first, although he will surely not resist any offers after contributing little to United's season.

Donny van de Beek: D-

It has been quite the fall from grace for the Netherlands international since arriving in a £40 million deal from Ajax.

Quite what the 24-year-old has done to deserve being frozen out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is anyone’s guess, but van de Beek has only started 14 games in all competitions — and just three in the Premier League.

He memorably came off the bench to score on his debut in the 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace in their opening fixture. But with Paul Pogba's resurgence and Bruno Fernandes' untouchable status at Old Trafford, he has found first-team opportunities limited.

He was an unused substitute for the final in Poland and it is difficult to see how the midfielder stays at Old Trafford beyond this summer.
