Man Utd 2-1 LASK: 5 talking points as Jesse Lingard scores again en route to last eight

Man Utd 's path to the Europa League quarter-finals was officially confirmed with a drab win at home to Austrian minnows LASK.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men were all-but confirmed a place in the next round having led 5-0 from the first leg, but produced a disappointing display at Old Trafford.

They even fell behind thanks to a superb, curling, long-range strike from LASK defender Philipp Wiesinger.

United soon pulled themselves back level though as Juan Mata set Jesse Lingard away to slot past the keeper.

Anthony Martial then scored with minutes to go just shortly after coming off the bench to save some face for United as they head into the last eight.

Here are the talking points.

1. Opportunity missed

Juan Mata produced one of many underwhelming displays (PA)

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called for a performance to build confidence going into the final eight, but United's display barely stirred any emotion.

While the result of the tie was already a foregone conclusion, United's second string did little to support their claims for more regular action.

Solskjaer said beforehand that every player was valuable but some of his squad have no doubt played their last minutes of the season.

In fact the performance may even cause Solskjaer to re-think the futures of the likes of Juan Mata, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Daniel James who underwhelmed against the Austrian minnows.

2. Second in command

For all David de Gea's poor form Sergio Romero simply hasn't been given a chance by his manager - and on this display you might wonder why.

Granted he didn't have bucket loads to do, and was beaten all ends up from a header which rattled his crossbar, but he dealt with everything else impeccably.

Romero got down low to keep out a fizzing effort from distance, and showed good anticipation to snuff out a through ball off the feet of the LASK striker, while collecting crosses cleanly.

He had no chance for the goal and was otherwise calm, composed and steady. Arguably just what United have been missing in that area.

3. Lingard reborn?

They say goals come like buses, which has sort of been the case for Jesse Lingard.

The midfielder scored his first goal of the season in the 98th minute against Leicester and notched again just before the hour mark vs LASK.

It was a pretty drab United performance, though Lingard was one of the players who stood out with a couple of neat flicks and energetic running.

The midfielder has had a tough time off the field but took his goal well and will no doubt be looking to build on his recent form.

4. What a hit, son

Shoot your shot. You only might get one chance.

Certainly LASK's Philipp Wiesinger took his superbly.

First time, 25 yards out, opens the body, perfect blend of curl and power. Romero was left simply waving at it on the way past.

While the lack of fans and the incredibly one-sided aggregate scoreline will perhaps have made his strike at Old Trafford slightly less special, Wiesinger's effort was straight out of the top drawer.

One to tell the grand-kids at least.

5. Copenhagen to come

United will face FC Copenhagen in the quarter-final of the competition on Monday after both sides confirmed their places in the last eight.

Copenhagen overturned a 1-0 first leg defeat to Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir to win 3-1 on aggregate, before United officially joined them in the next round.

The Danish club finished second in their domestic table this season, but represent a favourable draw for United.
