Man unwittingly took home unexploded bomb after trip to beach

A man was forced to call in army explosives experts - after discovering an item took home from a day at the beach was an unexploded bomb.

The man had found the unusual item while enjoying a trip to the Portico Docks area of Portsmouth earlier this month and taken it home with him to Weston-super-Mare.

But on further inspection the man realised that his unusual beach find was in fact potentially an unexploded World War Bomb - and called in the police.

Local police called in experts from the army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit who arrived at his home and removed the item.

The device was then taken to nearby Sand Bay where a controlled explosion was carried out.

A police spokesman said: “We received a report from a member of the public about an item believed to be a WW1 unexploded bomb, at about 8am on Friday 13 November.

“The informant had found the item in the Portico Docks area of Portsmouth and taken it home to his address in Weston-super-Mare before realising it was a potential explosive.

“Officers from the neighbourhood team and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit attended and removed the item.

“ It was taken to a safe location at Sand Bay, Kewstoke where a controlled explosion was carried out shortly after 11.30am.”
