Man United vs Nottingham Forest referee selected despite 'error' claim

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMLO) have reportedly accepted that the referee for Nottingham Forest’s clash against Manchester United made a mistake in his previous Premier League game.

Anthony Taylor is due to take charge for Forest’s trip to Old Trafford tonight after returning from refereeing in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar. The game will also be the two team’s first league match since the start of the tournament.

Taylor last refereed in the Premier League on November 6, when Aston Villa came out as 3-1 winners over Manchester United at Villa Park. But it has now been claimed that he made an error in that game.

With Villa 1-0 up after 11 minutes, the Birmingham club were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Lucas Digne found the back of the net from the set piece to double Villa’s lead.

But in setting up for the free kick, it has now been claimed that Manchester United’s defensive wall was placed further back than the usual 10 yards. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, United have since accessed the audio interaction between Taylor and Christian Eriksen, who noticed the mistake at the time.

The report adds that PGMLO Select Group 1 manager, former Premier League referee Jon Moss, agreed that an error had been made by the official and assured the club that he would be spoken to.

The game between Forest and United will be Taylor’s 13th Premier League match of the season, with the referee showing 42 yellow cards and two red cards in his 12 matches so far. He was in charge for Forest’s 1-1 draw against Villa at the City Ground back in October.

He has refereed a total of six Forest games in all competitions with the Reds coming out as winners in just one. Although they have also lost just one of the six matches with the other four being draws.
