Man United vs Fulham live: Sesko scores stoppage-time winner as hosts survive late Fulham fightback

Manchester United were given an almighty scare by Fulham but recovered to win a thriller and continue their perfect start under interim boss Michael Carrick.

United had a penalty disallowed early in the first half but still came out on top as Casemiro scored from the free-kick that was then awarded, while Matheus Cunha doubled their advantage in the second half and the Red Devils appeared to be cruising towards a regulation win.

But a late revival by Fulham set up a nervy finale at Old Trafford, with the visitors - who earlier had a Jorge Cuenca goal disallowed after a four-minute VAR check - awarded an 85th-minute penalty as Harry Maguire hacked down Raul Jimenez in the box, with the Mexican duly converting it.

Substitute Kevin scored a stoppage-time screamer and Fulham appeared to have nicked a point at the death before fellow substitute Benjamin Sesko powered home the winner. United clung on in the rest of injury time to move up to fourth, while Fulham were unlucky to come away empty-handed but remain in the top half.

Marco Silva fumes at VAR decisions

17:11 , Flo Clifford

Fulham boss Marco Silva is deeply unhappy about VAR’s involvement in today’s game. He tells Sky Sports: “The story of the game started with a horrendous terrible decision from John Brooks with the penalty he gave [United]. Horrendous decision from that moment, big, big mistake. It was the first time we saw all the Premier League fans and us coaches and players. We have to take all this frustration to win the next one.

“The penalty was given by the tackle. After, because the decision was so bad, they found a different foul [to award the free-kick].

“I feel my players, I feel our fans but we have to respect and the people in charge. I know why the penalty was given. VAR went in a completely different direction to find something to find a free-kick that was not the reason why the penalty was given.”

Has he spoken to the officials? “I don't want to get more cards because I want to be on the touchline. I don't want to speak more.”

He picked up his fifth yellow of the season for remonstrating after that incident.

Casemiro a 'legend' - Benjamin Sesko

17:00 , Flo Clifford

Sesko pays tribute to Casemiro, who kicked off United’s goalscoring today: “He is an unbelievable player, a legend. It is nice to play with him and it is also nice to listen to his advice. His work rate is unbelievable and he gives all his teams a boost. We are grateful to have him with us.”

(AFP via Getty Images)

'The work rate is definitely different' - Benjamin Sesko

16:51 , Flo Clifford

Asked about Michael Carrick’s message to his players about playing with freedom, Sesko continues: “It's true, he has said these things many times to the team. That's exactly what we are doing. But it's not just that, you can see how much we work hard for each other without the ball and that also contributes to good results in the end. The work rate is definitely different. Everyone is on point and covering their spaces. In the end, that's what counts.

“The aim is to continue like this. We want to focus on our work and what we have to do. We have work hard like we are and focus in every moment. All of this is going to lead to great results.”

'That was unbelievable' - Benjamin Sesko

16:44 , Flo Clifford

Benjamin Sesko tells Sky Sports: “That was unbelievable. Scoring at home and scoring the winner is unbelievable. I've been dreaming about that and dreaming that I can do that.

“We all know as a team how important these results are. We are on a really great run right now and we are just hoping that we can continue to work hard like that to win games. I'm really happy that I could help the team out. We can continue our streak now.”

Sesko broke Fulham's hearts mere minutes after Kevin's superb equaliser (Getty Images)

'Still a lot to play for' - Emile Smith Rowe

16:29 , Flo Clifford

Emile Smith Rowe continues: “This is football. We can't do much, all we can do is try to perform as best we can. It felt like some decisions didn't go our way but it's football at the end of the day.

“We want to do that every game, we want to compete, fight and show our best on and off the ball. I felt we got a bit unlucky today. We still have a lot to play for. We are still in the cups and have had a good season so far.”

'Bit annoying' - Emile Smith Rowe

16:23 , Flo Clifford

Emile Smith Rowe tells Sky Sports; “Really frustrating. I thought the boys fought really hard today to get back into the game. It's a bit annoying to concede straight after equalising.”

What did boss Marco Silva say? “We have to stick together at this moment in time. Coming here we knew it was going to be tough. We have to go again and stick together.”

Man Utd up to fourth

16:18 , Flo Clifford

With that result United are up to fourth in the Premier League, with top-four rivals Aston Villa losing to 10-man Brentford. Here are the scores from the rest of the early kick-offs:

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Crystal Palace

Aston Villa 0-1 Brentford

Spurs v Man City still to come.

Renaissance continues under Carrick

16:03 , Richard Jolly

An extraordinary game, when it looked like it would be a regulation win. A second consecutive 3-2 for Michael Carrick. The best moment of his United career for Benjamin Sesko. Perhaps, from a Fulham perspective, a shame Kevin's wonder goal came in defeat. But United are back up to fourth. The Carrick renaissance continues.

at Old Trafford

FULL-TIME: Man Utd 3-2 Fulham

16:02 , Flo Clifford

‘90+11: United are into the top four, and the winning run under Michael Carrick continues!

Gutting for Fulham, who hauled themselves back into it from 2-0 down.

Man Utd 3-2 Fulham

‘90+10: Jimenez lofts in a cross but it drifts out of play. Lammens takes his sweet time with the resulting goal kick. The crowd are in fine voice.

‘90+6: Fernandes set that up, Sesko just blasts it in.

Mbeumo may have an issue and he’s replaced by Yoro. Around four minutes of stoppage time left. Silva shakes his head in his technical area.

‘90+4: This is ridiculous... Sesko puts United back in front!

Man Utd 2-2 Fulham

15:53 , Flo Clifford

‘90+2: Kevin picks it up on the edge of the box, exchanges passes, and lets fly a beautiful curling shot past Lammens’ outstretched fingertips into the top right corner!

Marco Silva roars with delight on the touchline. That is some goal.

‘90+2: Madness!

Kevin the substitute scores an absolute screamer and that’s United’s lead obliterated! Old Trafford is silent.

Man Utd 2-1 Fulham

15:50 , Flo Clifford

‘90: Fulham want an equaliser. Nervy moment as Amad eventually hooks clear a cross from the left.

There will be NINE minutes added on, mostly for that daft wait for the VAR check after Cuenca’s goal.

Man Utd 2-1 Fulham

15:47 , Flo Clifford

‘87: Changes for both sides: Bassey is on for Cuenca, Mazraoui for Dalot.

Hope for Fulham?

15:46 , Richard Jolly

That is an unsaveable penalty from Raul Jimenez. Hope for Fulham, too, at a ground where they have done well in recent years.

at Old Trafford

GOAL! Man Utd 2-1 Fulham

15:45 , Flo Clifford

‘85: Jimenez halves United’s lead! He goes for a frankly daft stuttering run-up but then buries it in the top corner. Lammens goes the right way but not high enough. Fine penalty.

PENALTY TO FULHAM! Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:44 , Flo Clifford

‘84: Maguire goes into the book for that, his first of the season, and the on-field decision is confirmed by VAR!

PENALTY! Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:43 , Flo Clifford

‘84: Jimenez has a chance but at the back post but doesn’t get enough on it to trouble Lammens; Andersen rises highest to the resulting corner but it’s deflected behind by a United defender.

Now Jimenez has another chance, he’s brought down by a sliding challenge by Maguire in the box, and the ref points to the spot!

Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:39 , Flo Clifford

‘79: Fulham are still pushing... Iwobi’s corner is sent clear.

Chukwueze, who has done well to play at all given he is grieving the recent death of his mother, is replaced by Cairney now.

Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:37 , Richard Jolly

On comes Benjamin Sesko, who is one of the few who may not be enjoying Carrick's reign, given that he scored three times in two games under Darren Fletcher and has been benched ever since. Big cheers for Casemiro as he goes off.

at Old Trafford

OVER THE BAR! Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:36 , Flo Clifford

‘75: Sesko heads against the post and then sends the rebound over the bar! Would have been some first touch, that, all coming from a sweet ball dinked over by Amad.

Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:34 , Flo Clifford

‘74: Goalscorer Cunha applauds the fans as he’s replaced by Sesko... and Casemiro is given an ovation too as he makes way for Ugarte.

Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:33 , Flo Clifford

‘73: That VAR check went into a fourth minute, incidentally. ‘Clear and obvious’, etc...

Amad has a long-range effort blocked, then pulls it back for Cunha, who blasts over.

Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:31 , Flo Clifford

‘72: Changes for Fulham now: Smith Rowe and Robinson are off, Kevin and Sessegnon are on.

GOAL DISALLOWED! Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:29 , Flo Clifford

‘69: This is ridiculous. Boos ring out at the delay. They’re checking for a couple of offsides, on Cuenca and Chukwueze in the build-up... and it’s ruled out! Chukwueze is considered to be offside before the ball was deflected out to Cuenca.

VAR CHECK: Man Utd 2-1 Fulham

15:27 , Flo Clifford

‘68: Into the third minute of this VAR check. The crowd is getting agitated.

GOAL! Man Utd 2-1 Fulham

15:26 , Flo Clifford

‘66: Well, well, well! Fulham are back in this!

Jimenez’s free-kick clatters the wall, bounces around, falls to Cuenca loitering at the far post, and he nudges it past Lammens! VAR are checking it for offside, though...

Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:25 , Flo Clifford

‘64: Casemiro goes into the book for pulling back Smith Rowe, who goes down justtttt inside the box and wins a free-kick. Wilson stands over it, Jimenez is nearby. Dangerous territory.

Cunha on a roll under Carrick

15:18 , Richard Jolly

Carrick faced a decision who to bring in for Dorgu. He has got most of his decisions right so far and choosing Cunha looks another one. That was an explosive finish and the Brazilian has now either scored or assisted in each of the three games under Carrick.

at Old Trafford

GOAL! Man Utd 2-0 Fulham

15:17 , Flo Clifford

‘56: What a finish from Cunha! Casemiro threads a lovely no-look ball through to Cunha on the right and he blasts a powerful, curling angled shot beyond Leno and into the back of the net! Some finish.

He, Mbeumo and Amad do a little dance to celebrate.

Lammens the difference-maker

15:14 , Richard Jolly

Senne Lammens has made a couple of sharp saves today - as has Bernd Leno in the Fulham goal - and United may yet come to rue the start of the season, when Altay Bayindir was in goal, and the month between Lammens joining and Ruben Amorim actually picking him. The points dropped then may yet be decisive.

at Old Trafford

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

15:12 , Flo Clifford

‘52: Casemiro heads away the delivery.

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

15:12 , Flo Clifford

‘52: Wilson lofts it in, Lammens palms it away but not far enough, it bounces around the box a bit and eventually goes out for a Fulham corner. Wilson stands over it.

SAVE! Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

15:11 , Flo Clifford

‘51: Now Fulham fancy it, Iwobi lofts in a cross to Chukwueze at the far post, but Martinez latches onto his cross for a last-gasp clearance!

Now Wilson is fouled and wins a free-kick for Fulham on the edge of the box.

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

15:09 , Flo Clifford

‘48: Dalot releases Mbeumo, it’s a well-timed run into the box but Leno runs out to smother it! Mbeumo denied!

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

15:08 , Flo Clifford

‘48: As things stand United are closing the gap on third-placed Aston Villa to five points; Unai Emery’s men are 1-0 down to Brentford, who have had Kevin Schade sent off for a ludicrous stamp on Matty Cash. Straight red.

SECOND HALF: Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

15:05 , Flo Clifford

Back out for the second! More goals, anyone?

HALF-TIME: Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:51 , Flo Clifford

Maguire’s off-target header is the last play of the half. Started off with plenty of intention by both sides but the intensity waned as it went on.

Man United have been marginally better, Fulham just not doing enough in the final third, and the hosts lead through Casemiro’s 19th-minute header. Having had a penalty - rightfully - disallowed, United made the most of the resulting free-kick.

CLOSE! Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:49 , Flo Clifford

‘45+3: Old Trafford wakes up a bit now as Amad cuts in on the right, latching onto Fernandes’ low cross, but Berge makes the block.

United have a corner... Maguire’s header goes wide.

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:48 , Flo Clifford

‘45+3: Three minutes added on. Smith Rowe heads Iwobi’s cross wide.

More goals incoming?

14:46 , Flo Clifford

An open first half, which suggests there could be more goals in the second. So does the recent history of a fixture that has made more than its share of late goals.

at Old Trafford

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:45 , Flo Clifford

‘45: Fernandes absolutely hacks down Chukwueze as the forward marauds away, then clutches his shoulder muscle in discomfort.

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:43 , Flo Clifford

‘43: Fernandes’ delivery is flicked on by the Fulham defence and booted up the pitch for a counter... that’s snuffed out quickly. The tempo has slowed right down.

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:42 , Flo Clifford

‘42: Chukwueze wins a corner... it’s floated in by Iwobi to the back post but Jimenez sends it over. Now Andersen goes into the book for hauling Mbuemo back, nearly sending him over. Free-kick to the hosts.

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:40 , Flo Clifford

‘40: Fulham are still searching; Iwobi lets fly from a long way out and Lammens dives low to his right to save.

VAR in hot water once again

14:37 , Richard Jolly

A clarification from the Premier League on the penalty that wasn't - they say (believe it or not) that the referee gave it for the shirt pull by Cuenca on Cunha, not the challenge, but then VAR only ruled it was outside the box, leading to the free kick. Which, in turn, brought a goal anyway.

at Old Trafford

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:34 , Flo Clifford

‘34: United are looking pretty comfortable at the moment. Mbuemo is through on goal but Cuenca - who has amends to make - gets there in time, and the resulting corner is dealt with.

Now Fulham get numbers forward but Smith Rowe’s cross is too short for Robinson - and now Amad is on the charge, slipping away from Robinson with ease. Trying to keep a lid on the Ivorian is proving difficult.

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:31 , Flo Clifford

‘29: Mainoo - no doubt the biggest beneficiary of Amorim’s exit - sends a looping cross towards Fernandes, but he doesn’t get a foot to it and Leno jumps to save easily.

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:27 , Flo Clifford

‘27: Chukwueze lets fly a tame low strike that Lammens dives to get. Fulham are certainly finding some space but not delivering much in the final third.

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:24 , Flo Clifford

‘24: Fernandes has a cross hooked clear by Cuenca; now Shaw blasts a hopeful cross-cum-shot over the bar.

Silva is stewing on the sidelines.

Casemiro makes his presence felt

14:22 , Richard Jolly

That is one of the ways Manchester United will miss Casemiro when he leaves in the summer - for a defensive midfielder, he is a fine goalscorer.

at Old Trafford

Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:22 , Flo Clifford

‘21: Fulham boss Marco Silva has picked up a booking for protesting the award of that free-kick. He’s not happy.

GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Fulham

14:19 , Flo Clifford

‘19: Casemiro gets the opener!

No penalty, no problem - he leaps for the free-kick and thunders home a header to put United ahead! He’s mobbed by his teammates.

PENALTY OVERTURNED! Man Utd 0-0 Fulham

14:18 , Flo Clifford

‘18: Boos as the penalty is overturned; Man Utd have a free-kick instead. That feels the right call.

Man Utd 0-0 Fulham

14:17 , Flo Clifford

‘17: Cuenca got a touch of the ball. This feels harsh, if it’s given. VAR are inspecting...

PENALTY! Man Utd 0-0 Fulham

14:16 , Flo Clifford

‘16: Jimenez goes down and theatrically rolls on the pitch; play doesn’t stop and as he peeks around to see what’s going on, only to see the referee studiously ignore him, he gets himself up without too much bother.

Oooh, now Fulham have a penalty! Cuenca got away with one on Mbuemo but he nicks Cunha at the back line and the ref points to the spot!

SAVE! Man Utd 0-0 Fulham

14:14 , Flo Clifford

‘14: Fulham win a corner... it’s played short and Wilson lofts in a ball to Andersen at the far post, but his header doesn’t have enough oomph and Lammens palms it away.

Fulham have another... he gets a strong hand to this one too.

Man Utd 0-0 Fulham

14:11 , Flo Clifford

‘11: Mbuemo goes down in the box! Cuenca catches him a little late, barging him over right on the edge of the area; no penalty, despite the home fans’ protestations.

Fulham counter but Amad, who is everywhere, cuts in and steals the ball back.

Man Utd 0-0 Fulham

14:10 , Flo Clifford

‘10: Amad is a real bright spark for United; he cuts inside Robinson and wins the first corner of the game.

United have the second-highest number of goals from set-pieces so far this season, just behind Arsenal.

Mbuemo’s delivery is deep to Maguire but Leno catches his header!

Man Utd wary of Fulham threat

14:08 , Richard Jolly

Part of the test for Manchester United today is the one Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim failed too often: can Michael Carrick win the kind of games that United invariably used to? At home, against a mid-ranking Premier League side? Fulham, and many another, have shown they can beat United in recent years. They have begun confidently here.

at Old Trafford

Man Utd 0-0 Fulham

14:07 , Flo Clifford

‘7: Iwobi lofts a long ball forward to Wilson, who squares to Chukwueze in the box... Maguire makes the block.

SAVE! Man Utd 0-0 Fulham

14:06 , Flo Clifford

‘5: United are looking settled so far and Amad Diallo cuts inside Robinson, letting fly and forcing the first save from Leno!

Man Utd 0-0 Fulham

14:05 , Flo Clifford

‘4: Fulham look through a way through United’s midfield and find one, Smith Rowe releasing Jimenez... Robinson crosses in and the ball falls to Andersen but he wastes it, punting it over the bar from range.

Closing in on kick-off

We are T-minus 10 minutes away from kick-off at Old Trafford.

Will it be three on the bounce for Michael Carrick, or are Fulham about to give the rejuvenated Red Devils a reality check?

We’ll have all the action, next!

'Carrick edging towards rare Amorim feat'

13:40 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Old Trafford:

“Michael Carrick might not have changed a winning formula if he did not have to. But with Patrick Dorgu injured, someone had to come in and it seemed logical that someone would be Matheus Cunha, the scorer of the winner at Arsenal last week. Beat Fulham today and he will get three league wins in a row, which is something Ruben Amorim only managed once in his reign.”

Michael Carrick responds to fan protests

13:30 , Will Castle

“I don't think it connects with the two wins, to be honest,” Carrick said. “It doesn't affect the team. I fully respect the supporters. They're incredible. They have been for so long and had a lot of ups and some downs as well, but I'm not offended by it or anything, and the players certainly aren't, I think.

“Within the stadium, the support we've felt, and that's been there for all the games that I've watched for quite some time, has been of the highest level. I'm sure to continue to be like that.

“The connection that we've had over the last couple of weeks has been pretty special and we've both fed off that. I think the supporters have fed off it. We have as a group, the players certainly have, and that's something we need to keep building on moving forward because that's exactly how we wanted it to be.

“I think it's what we feel, what we can grasp at the minute, we feel the upmost support from the supporters as much as ever, and that's where we want to keep moving towards.”

Patrick Dorgu out for months as Man United dealt worst case scenario for his injury

13:10 , Flo Clifford

Explaining his absence today, Patrick Dorgu is set for up to 10 weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring problem after Manchester United were dealt the worst case scenario for the player’s injury.

Dorgu went down with a thigh problem late into Sunday’s win over Premier League leaders Arsenal, a game in which the Dane starred and scored a spectacular half-volley to give his side the lead after the restart.

The bold decision Michael Carrick faces to implement his Manchester United masterplan

13:00 , Richard Jolly

When Thomas Tuchel was parachuted into Chelsea mid-season four years ago, he actually arrived by plane. And on it, he devised the tactics that propelled a team who had languished in mid-table in the Premier League to Champions League glory. It involved a change of shape, to a 3-4-3 formation.

When Michael Carrick was taken from the relative obscurity of being a former Middlesbrough manager and given the Manchester United post for the rest of the campaign, the situation was different; the solution too.

Fulham switch things up on the left

12:54 , Will Castle

Just like Man United, Fulham’s only change for the afternoon comes at left wing.

Samuel Chukwueze gets the nod in place of Kevin, who started last weekend’s late win against Brighton.

Man United make one change

12:51 , Will Castle

Just the one change for Manchester United from the side that stunned Arsenal last weekend, and it’s a change Michael Carrick has been forced to make.

Patrick Dorgu, who scored an outrageous volley at the Emirates, is out for 10 weeks with a hamstring injury and as such, last week’s match-winner Matheus Cunha comes in to start for the Red Devils on the left.

Roy Keane rants Michael Carrick lacks football knowledge to win titles for Man Utd

12:37 , Flo Clifford

Despite a recent uptick in form it still isn’t exactly all plain sailing at Old Trafford, with plenty of old boys continuing to weigh in, helpfully or otherwise, on how the club should be run.

Roy Keane has poured cold water on suggestions that Michael Carrick should be appointed Manchester United's permanent manager, despite the interim boss enjoying a flawless start to his tenure.

However, former United captain Keane has ranted that Carrick lacks sufficient "football knowledge" to lead the club to Premier League title glory, insisting they must seek a different candidate for the permanent role.

Michael Carrick sends warning to Manchester United players ahead of Fulham test

12:27 , Richard Jolly

Michael Carrick has warned Manchester United they would be “bang out of order” to take victory over Fulham for granted.

United have begun Carrick’s reign with victories over Manchester City and Arsenal but, are defeating the top two in the Premier League, they face a lower-profile third match against in-form Fulham.

Michael Carrick’s spell is off to the perfect start – but different tests await rejuvenated United

12:17 , Chris Wilson

Michael Carrick could hardly have dreamt of a better start to his second spell as Manchester United’s interim manager, but he has passed his first tests with flying colours.

While a derby day win over Manchester City last week left United fans on cloud nine, the club’s 3-2 win over Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday is an even more impressive result, the visitors stunning the league leaders as their fans delighted in a professional, inventive and at times brilliant performance.

Man Utd vs Fulham

11:07 , Mike Jones

Manchester United host Fulham in the Premier League this afternoon as Michael Carrick’s rejuvenated side look to stay in the lead in the fight for top four.

United welcome the Cottagers to Old Trafford having secured back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Arsenal over their last two games, with Carrick’s side beating the league leaders 3-2 in a dramatic match last week to rise to fourth.

However, the former United midfielder will know that the match against Fulham will bring a different type of test for his new-look side, with more expectation on the hosts as they face a side below them in the table.

The visitors were able to frustrate United at Craven Cottage earlier in the season and with star man Harry Wilson in fine form, they’ll present a stern test as they look to cut the gap to the hosts to just one point.
