Manchester United scrapped to three points on their return to Old Trafford following their humiliating Carabao Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby, beating Burnley in an entertaining five-goal thriller to secure their first Premier League win of the season.
Ruben Amorim is already under immense pressure in the United dugout but a 3-2 win over the newly promoted Clarets will ease the tension somewhat.
The Portuguese dropped keeper Andre Onana after their Carabao Cup defeat, with new signing Benjamin Sesko also on the bench, but fellow summer signing Bryan Mbeumo scored his first top-flight goal for the Red Devils with Bruno Fernandes winning the day for the hosts with a penalty in the dying moments of extra time.
There was concern however as Matheus Cunha limped off injured, while Burnley acquitted themselves well and were unlucky to concede the spot-kick at the death having come from behind twice.

'The way the game has gone'
17:55 , Callum Rice-CoatesBurnley manager Scott Parker, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "My thoughts are I'm disappointed, gutted, but immensely proud of the team. Our reaction second half, I am proud.
"The way the game ends, it is the way the game has gone - quadruple checking every minute. The on field decision, the referee didn't give the foul. Then we have re-reffed it, VAR seeing a clear and obvious error. It's not the ref, it's a fella 200-odd miles away in a box. That's the way the game has gone.
"It's a sterile game, a long time ago when you had the passion and celebration - now you are standing around and waiting."
'We have a lot to do'
17:39 , Callum Rice-CoatesRuben Amorim, speaking to Premier League Productions: "It is three points, if you look at the game we should solve it in the first half and control the game - but we are fighting to the last minute because of things we overcomplicate.
"Look at the first half, we have so many chances to score. You feel you can control the game. But one throw in, one set piece. I shook my head, because sometimes football is like this.
"We now have two weeks with a lot of opportunities. This was a game we had to win, but we have a lot to do."
Other results
17:28 , Callum Rice-CoatesThe final scores in the other 3pm Premier League matches:
Sunderland 2-1 Brentford
Tottenham 0-1 Bournemouth
Wolves 2-3 Everton
'A great feeling'
17:15 , Callum Rice-CoatesBryan Mbeumo, speaking to Premier League Productions: "It's a big club, the expectations are high and we need to deal with it. But a great feeling to win here.
"With what happened in the week, we had to react with a win. That's what we've done."
Crazy game
17:08 , Richard JollyCrazy game, crazy end. On the basis of the chances they have created, United have deserved victory. And as Burnley were perhaps fortunate when a penalty decision was overturned in the first half, they may have less grounds for complaint about one at the end. Credit to Bruno Fernandes for holding his nerve. Others might not have done.
Full-time: Man Utd 3-2 Burnley
17:07 , Callum Rice-CoatesThat’s it! A much-needed win for United and especially for Ruben Amorim, who looks a relieved, if stressed man. Fernandes’ late penalty seals the points but it was far from comfortable again. Burnley came agonisingly close to what would have been an impressive draw.
GOAL! Man Utd 3-2 Burnley (Fernandes)
17:00 , Callum Rice-Coates90+7 mins: Fernandes makes no mistake this time! He converts and United, surely, have their first win of the season.
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:58 , Callum Rice-Coates90+4 mins: Penalty! Incredible. Anthony fouls Amad and it’s deemed to have been just inside the box, having originally been given as a free kick. A late, late reprieve for the Red Devils?
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:57 , Callum Rice-Coates90+2 mins: There’s a VAR check for a possible United penalty as Amad goes down in the box...
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:55 , Callum Rice-Coates90+1 mins: Five minutes of added time at Old Trafford.
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:53 , Callum Rice-Coates88 mins: An opportunity for Sesko again as this time Dalot crosses. Once more, the header is disappointing, a tame effort.
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:52 , Callum Rice-Coates87 mins: Mbeumo lifts the ball into the box and it’s met by Sesko, who can’t keep his header down. Now would be a good time for the new arrival to get his first goal.
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:51 , Callum Rice-Coates86 mins: The Old Trafford faithful, usually patient, are becoming irate. Amad miscontrols a pass and the ball runs out for a throw. Burnley are close to a valuable point.
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:47 , Callum Rice-Coates83 mins: An opening for Zirkzee, who’s picked out by Amad just outside the box but sends his shot way off target.
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:43 , Callum Rice-Coates79 mins: United deal with a couple of Burnley set pieces. Frustration is growing for the hosts, while the visitors have become more confident. You feel Amorim really needs a late winner here.
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:37 , Callum Rice-Coates73 mins: Big-money signing Benjamin Sesko is on in place of Casemiro.
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:37 , Callum Rice-Coates72 mins: Nothing comes from a Burnley corner as Bayindir manages to claim. There is a feeling of insecurity about United whenever they’re asked to defend though.
Man Utd 2-2 Burnley
16:34 , Richard Jolly70 mins: A winger called Anthony scores at Old Trafford? That's hasn't happened much, even if the pedants might point out Antony has a diferent spelling.
GOAL! Man Utd 2-2 Burnley (Anthony)
16:33 , Callum Rice-Coates67 mins: Incredible! Burnley are level again, and it’s Jaidon Anthony. United fail to deal with a long throw and Bayindir spills a shot from Tchaouna. Anthony prods the ball towards goal, where Mainoo nor Bayindir can stop it.
Man Utd 2-1 Burnley
16:30 , Callum Rice-Coates63 mins: Close! Mbeumo fires a corner into the path of Fernandes, who sends a volley just wide. Those set pieces have been threatening today for Amorim’s side.
Man Utd 2-1 Burnley

GOAL! Man Utd 2-1 Burnley (Mbeumo)
16:21 , Callum Rice-Coates54 mins: That didn’t last long! Just 15 seconds after the restart and United are back in front. Dalot cuts back from the byline and Mbeumo fires home his first Premier League goal. He’s been impressive.
GOAL! Man Utd 1-1 Burnley (Foster)
16:20 , Callum Rice-Coates53 mins: Burnley level! Lyle Foster converts a Larsen cross and United are made to rue their missed chances.
Man Utd 1-0 Burnley
16:14 , Richard Jolly51 mins: A second change in United's front three, with first Matheus Cunha and now the impressive Mason Mount going off, and no Benjamin Sesko coming on. All rather intriguing.
Man Utd 1-0 Burnley
16:14 , Callum Rice-Coates49 mins: Early involvement for Mainoo, who drives down the left and crosses for Zirkzee, but the latter’s first-time effort is saved.
Man Utd 1-0 Burnley

Half-time: Man Utd 1-0 Burnley

Man Utd 1-0 Burnley

Man Utd 1-0 Burnley
15:48 , Callum Rice-Coates45 mins: United continue to threaten from set pieces. The latest is drilled in by Fernandes and met by Amad on the volley. It’s struck superbly but Dubravka makes a strong save.
Man Utd 1-0 Burnley
15:42 , Callum Rice-Coates40 mins: Amad fires a shot off from the edge of the box. It deflects behind for a corner, from which Mount glances a header onto the top of the bar. Close.
Man Utd 1-0 Burnley
15:40 , Callum Rice-Coates38 mins: Chance! Burnley should be level. Cullen picks out Larsen with an excellent diagonal ball. The latter finds former United man Hannibal Mejbri in space in the box, but his first time shot flies over.
Man Utd 1-0 Burnley
15:38 , Richard Jolly36 mins: Two Premier League goals for Manchester United this season, neither scored by a United player. First Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz scored an own goal, now Burnley's Josh Cullen. Is this the Amorim masterplan?
Man Utd 1-0 Burnley
15:38 , Callum Rice-Coates35 mins: Burnley are having a better spell in the game but they’ve created very little so far.
Man Utd 1-0 Burnley

Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:25 , Callum Rice-Coates23 mins: More drama at Old Trafford! A huge penalty appeal as Amad plays a one-two with Cunha and bursts into the box. The former goes down under a sliding tackle but the referee waves away the appeals. Not enough contact.
Shortly after, Yoro heads over from close range.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:23 , Richard Jolly21 mins: A different kind of problem with penalties for Manchester United, who were initially awarded one and then saw it overturned when it was ruled that Kyle Walker wasn't fouling Mason Mount. Perhaps it is more accurate to say they were fouling each other.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:22 , Callum Rice-Coates20 mins: No penalty! Walker is adjudged to have not fouled Mount.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:21 , Callum Rice-Coates19 mins: There’ll be on an on-field review. The referee goes over to the monitor. This could be overturned...
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:19 , Callum Rice-Coates17 mins: There is, inevitably, a VAR check. The foul from Walker started outside the box but continued into the area, where Mount went down.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:18 , Callum Rice-Coates16 mins: Penalty! Kyle Walker fouls Mount as he runs into the box and the referee points to the spot.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:17 , Callum Rice-Coates15 mins: Close again! And it’s Mbeumo again. This time Mount plays him in, and his first-time shot on his right foot flashes just wide of the far post.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:17 , Callum Rice-Coates14 mins: Good effort! Fernandes plays a sumptuous long pass out to Mbeumo, whose first touch is superb. It gives him space to unleash a left-footed shot, which Dubravka saves well.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:14 , Richard Jolly12 mins: An up-tempo start from Manchester United at a loud Old Trafford. Some of the noise, though, has come from the Burnley fans who have only seen their team win here once since the 1960s. This could be a fine chance for a second victory.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:12 , Callum Rice-Coates10 mins: A better spell for Burnley as Ugochukwu gets involved, driving forward and playing the ball out wide. The midfielder attempts a cross moments later which strikes Casemiro, who goes down hurt.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:08 , Callum Rice-Coates6 mins: Cunha sets off on a driving run from the right to the edge of the box, but his low shot is easily saved. Amad then sends in a. floating cross which is flicked just past the post by Esteve. Burnley deal with the corner, but they’re under the cosh here.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:06 , Callum Rice-Coates4 mins: It’s a frantic start, full-blooded and intense. United are clearly keen to make amends for their embarrassment in midweek.
Man Utd 0-0 Burnley
15:05 , Callum Rice-Coates3 mins: An early corner for the hosts is swung in by Mount and Dubravka is forced into a save as the ball diverts off a Burnley player.

Man United's 'attitude stinks' - Paul Merson
14:40 , Flo CliffordPaul Merson has not held back on his criticism of this United side, saying on Sky Sports: “You have to put in the hard work. You could be some of the most talented players in the world but you have to work hard.
“If Man Utd turn up with the attitude Grimsby had, there's only one result and everyone would have been turning over at half-time, looking for something else to watch. That wasn't the case.
“The attitude stinks from half of them. Back in the day, there were shocks, the pitches were a joke. That pitch was immaculate and they should go out and destroy Grimsby.”
Alejandro Garnacho finally set for Man United exit as Chelsea agree £40m fee
14:30 , Flo CliffordChelsea have agreed a deal with Manchester United to sign Alejandro Garnacho for £40m.
United will also have a 10 per cent sell-on clause for the Argentina winger, who was part of Ruben Amorim’s “bomb squad” of players who were not training with the first-team squad and were omitted from their pre-season tour of the United States.
Chelsea’s interest in Garnacho dates back to the January transfer window, when he was also wanted by Napoli.

Ruben Amorim concedes Man United aren’t ready to compete in Europe
14:21 , Flo CliffordRuben Amorim insists Manchester United are not ready to compete in Europe and has taken the silver linings from his side’s continental absence this season.
United, who finished 15th in the Premier League last season, missed out on the chance to qualify for Europe's top club competition when they lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in May - but could not take advantage of having fewer midweek games as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
“I think we were not prepared to play in Europe, that is my feeling,” Amorim said ahead of the clash. “To have strong games in the Champions League and then play Premier League, we need time to develop as a team.
"So (the players) need to fight for their places, and then everything can change."
Team news
14:12 , Flo CliffordRuben Amorim makes one change from United’s last Premier League outing, a draw at Fulham last weekend, as Diogo Dalot replaces Patrick Dorgu at left wing-back.

The haunting Ruben Amorim image that sums up Manchester United’s deep-rooted decay
13:57 , Jack RathbornRuben Amorim claimed he had “nothing to say”, but, in vintage fashion for such a crisis, one picture said enough.
The haunting image of the Manchester United manager looking away during the shootout, having already been playing with a tactics board, was one thing. Well, two things… and they mount up.
But for all that to culminate in a defeat against a League Two side in Grimsby Town just adds a sense of farce to something that had already seemed alien.

Diogo Dalot says ‘we gave the game to them’ after woeful United loss to Mariners
13:47 , Jack Rathborn“I think we gave the game to them, clearly, straight away, exactly what they wanted. Win duels, second balls, set plays.
“We fought back but I think that was the minimum that we could show to the fans that travelled today, for ourselves, for the club, but clearly not good enough.
“We cannot come here and expect that it’s going to be easy, because we know already these competitions, these clubs.
“Credit also (to them) because they fought really hard to deserve to go through, but it shouldn’t be enough to win against us because we should have shown much more.”

Ruben Amorim admits ‘sometimes I want to quit’ Man United job
13:36 , Jack RathbornRuben Amorim has said that sometimes he wants to resign as Manchester United manager – but insisted he was just being emotional when he cast doubt on his future after the Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town.
The Portuguese said “something has to change” after United lost on penalties to the League Two team but claimed that in the heat of the moment he sometimes hates his players.
But Amorim claimed it was just a passionate outburst and admitted there will be plenty more as he vowed not to change.

Kobbie Mainoo set to fight for Manchester United place as club reject loan request
13:26 , Jack RathbornManchester United want Kobbie Mainoo to stay and fight for his place after rejecting the homegrown midfielder’s request to leave on loan.
The 20-year-old academy graduate has made 73 first-team appearances and scored seven goals for the Red Devils, including in the 2024 FA Cup final win against rivals Manchester City.
PA understands United will not sanction a loan and have expressed to Mainoo that they value him and want him to stay to fight for a spot in Ruben Amorim’s side.

Ruben Amorim vows to change Man United formation on one condition
13:15 , Jack RathbornRuben Amorim admitted he could not promise he would still be manager of Manchester United next month and vowed to only change his beloved 3-4-3 formation if the players master it first.
The Portuguese brought his future into question with his comments after the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby on Wednesday.
And he had joked on Friday that “sometimes I want to quit” United in the heat of the moment after a setback, when he also said that sometimes he “hated” his players.

12:57 , Jack RathbornManchester United have agreed to sell winger Antony to Real Betis in a £25m deal, bringing to an end the second most expensive player in their history’s unhappy time at Old Trafford.
United will also have a 50 percent sell-on clause but are still set to make a huge loss on Antony, who cost them £85m when he followed former manager Erik ten Hag from Ajax in 2022.
But the 25-year-old’s troubled spell in Manchester is nearing an end, with the Brazilian now travelling to Spain to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms.
