Man United v Brighton live: Bryan Mbeumo quells late fears to seal third United win on the trot

Manchester United survived a late scare to end their losing streak against Brighton and make it three wins on the bounce for Ruben Amorim.

Matheus Cunha broke the deadlock with his first goal in a United shirt, curling in a perfectly-placed finish before Casemiro doubled the hosts’ lead with a far less aesthetically-pleasing deflected effort from range.

Bryan Mbeumo made it three after the break to seemingly put the game to bed, but former United star Danny Welbeck offered a glimmer of hope to Brighton when he blasted a stunning free-kick past Senne Lammens.

The Seagulls set up a nervy finale as Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit to one in stoppage time, but Mbeumo’s second quelled any fears of a comeback as United sealed another victory.

Fabian Hurzeler on Brighton's own mistakes costing them

20:45 , Will Castle

"In the end it is about execution and our execution wasn't right today,” he told BBC Sport. “We made too many easy mistakes and we have to start in training, take every pass and every touch serious. We have to improve."

“The character was good, the personality was there and the belief was there. We never gave up but the main thing is, we made too easy mistakes.

“The rest, the plan and how we were structured was good but in the end you have to have the execution and that is something we missed today."

Danny Welbeck's post-match thoughts

20:30 , Will Castle

"We are a bit gutted,” he told Sky Sports. “There was part of the game early on where we dominated but a few silly mistakes led to goals. We are up against quality so they will punish you. It is learning curve of us. We showed great character at the end but it wasn't good enough.

"We put ourselves in a really difficult position. We have a great group and everyone is going to keep fighting whatever the score is. We got two goals and were closing to maybe getting a third. It didn't happen but it is a good sign we showed character.

"It is the best [Man Utd] side we have faced in a while. They were really organised and structure, they always have incredible players and today they really punished our mistakes. A difficult game but one we can look back and analyse. I do believe we can come here and get the three points.

"I'm feeling really good. Fit and strong, I'm glad to be among the goals and most important thing is trying to get the three points and I will keep on doing my best."

Matheus Cunha on what his Man United first goal meant to him

20:15 , Will Castle

"It is so hard to say something,” Cunha told BBC Sport. “I have worked so hard for this. This is the club and this performance needs to be common and normal.

“I feel so good to be part of this. My first goal here at Old Trafford, I dreamed a lot of this but of course the win is much more important."

“I joked with Bryan [Mbeumo] and [Benjamin] Sesko, I told them I need to have this feeling [scoring], I felt so anxious to be a part of this and when I scored they said 'look you can enjoy it now.'

“All the day the support for my team-mates, I feel so good to be part of this."

Bryan Mbeumo: 'The atmosphere was crazy'

19:55 , Will Castle

“The atmosphere is crazy here,” Mbeumo told Sky Sports. “The fans are unbelievable and it's always good to score goals and especially here.

"I enjoy it a lot here. It hasn't been easy at the start. It's a new environment, a new expectation but I think with the automatism, with the link up with the team, I think everything is going the right way.

"The work we put in, the effort, the togetherness we give on the pitch is key and after we try to stick to the plan and we try to play as best as possible."

FULL-TIME! Manchester United 4-2 Brighton

19:41 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Old Trafford:

“United were excellent for the most part, very fragile for about 20 minutes, but they deserved victory. That is only the second time they have scored four league goals in a game under Amorim.”

Manchester United survived a late scare to end their losing streak against Brighton and make it three wins on the bounce for Ruben Amorim.

And breathe!

GOAL! Manchester United 4-2 Brighton (Mbeumo, 90+6')

19:25 , Will Castle

THAT DOES FINISH IT! THREE WINS ON THE TROT FOR MAN UNITED!

Manchester United 3-2 Brighton

19:24 , Will Castle

90+5 mins: SAVE! That could have finished it.

Fernandes volleys from the tight angle but Verbruggen’s body gets in the way.

'Age difference between provider and scorer'

19:23 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly at Old Trafford:

“Milner (39) sets up goal for Kostoulos (18). Not often there is a such a big difference in age between provider and scorer.”

GOAL! Manchester United 3-2 Brighton (Kostoulas, 90+2')

19:20 , Will Castle

WOW.

Kostoulas heads in from Milner’s perfect corner to reduce the deficit to one.

Brighton have five minutes to find an equaliser.

Manchester United 3-1 Brighton

19:19 , Will Castle

90 mins: SEVEN minutes added on. We’ve seen late drama at Chelsea and Newcastle today - will there be more here?

Manchester United 3-1 Brighton

19:16 , Will Castle

88 mins: SAVE! Kadioglu hits it well aiming for the top-left corner, but it dips to a nice height for Lammens to save and parry for a corner.

Manchester United 3-1 Brighton

19:15 , Will Castle

86 mins: Brighton having to dig in to prevent a fourth from going in down the other end, with a big challenge stopping Zirkzee from letting fly.

Very attacking change from the visitors - Wieffer off for Tzimas.

Manchester United 3-1 Brighton

19:11 , Will Castle

83 mins: Ugarte is on for Cunha, while Zirkzee replaces Sesko.

Meanwhile, Brighton have brought on Greek wonderkid Kostoulas for Rutter.

'Ugarte on to shore up the midfield'

19:10 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly at Old Trafford:

“Did Amorim have to send on Ugarte to try and shore up the midfield? United lost control after Mainoo replaced Casemiro and neither Mainoo nor Dorgu has made a good impression so far.”

Manchester United 3-1 Brighton

19:07 , Will Castle

78 mins: Brighton are going for this.

Gomez had his effort blocked soon after the restart, and Minteh just saw another shooting opportunity go awry as he curled high and wide from inside the box.

Maybe this isn’t over...

GOAL! Manchester United 3-1 Brighton (Welbeck, 74')

19:02 , Will Castle

WHAT A FREE-KICK BY WELBECK!

Against his former club, Welbeck hits his effort true to get it over the wall and past Lammens.

Can Brighton salvage something here?

'Dorgu fortunate not to see red'

19:02 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Old Trafford:

“Interesting to see Amad replaced by Patrick Dorgu, as he was at Anfield last week. Amorim seems to have settled on a plan of starting with the moer attacking wing-back and then taking him off with his side ahead. Dorgu, meanwhile, is probably fortunate Minteh's touch took the ball towards Lammens, there, or that yellow card would surely have been red.”

Manchester United 3-0 Brighton

19:01 , Will Castle

72 mins: Brighton break up the other end with Minteh sprinting towards goal.

His second touch is far too heavy, there’s no way he’s getting onto the end of that, but Dorgu nevertheless brings him down, leading to protests for a red card.

Instead, it’s yellow from the referee - mainly due to the fact he lost control of the ball.

Manchester United 3-0 Brighton

18:59 , Will Castle

71 mins: SAVE! Wonderful stop by Verbruggen to prevent a fourth!

Fernandes slips it back to Mbeumo who tries to place it in the bottom corner, but Verbruggen gets down to tip around the post.

Manchester United 3-0 Brighton

18:58 , Will Castle

69 mins: Ruben Amorim, hearing his name sung at Old Trafford, thinks the game is won. He’s surely right.

He’s already brought on Heaven for Shaw, while Diallo and Casemiro have now been replaced by Dorgu and Mainoo.

GOAL! Manchester United 3-0 Brighton (Mbeumo, 61')

18:50 , Will Castle

Bryan Mbeumo makes it three - and that’s game over!

There were protests from Brighton players who felt Shaw fouled Rutter in the build-up, but Mbeumo did his job, firing through the legs of his man to give Verbruggen no chance.

VAR approves the goal, and it is three.

'Triple change for Brighton that Fabian Hurzeler may wish he made at half-time'

18:49 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Old Trafford:

“A triple change for Brighton and Fabian Hurzeler may have wished he made it at half-time, given that United have been the superior side since the break as well. One of the players coming on (James Milner) is twice the age of one of the others (Tommy Watson). Though between them, Watson and Diego Gomez are older than Milner. Carlos Baleba is one of those to go off: of interest to United in the summer, he hasn't really shown them what they are missing. He had been booked, so Hurzeler may have spared him a different kind of early departure.”

Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:47 , Will Castle

59 mins: SAVE! Minteh’s curling delivery goes all the way through the crowd of United shirts, requiring a crucial fingertip from Lammens to ensure it doesn’t nestle in the far corner.

Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:45 , Will Castle

56 mins: Ayari has his blushes spared as he gives it straight to Sesko, who with space to shoot blasts an effort towards Verbruggen’s goal.

Luckily for the Brighton midfielder, it’s straight down the Dutchman’s throat.

Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:41 , Will Castle

53 mins: United are getting a lot of joy down that right hand side, with Diallo and Mbeumo linking up nicely.

This game is still pretty open, with Brighton having the occasional foray forward.

Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:37 , Will Castle

48 mins: SAVE! Great reaction stop from Verbruggen to deny Fernandes and Manchester United a third!

Well worked by the hosts, with Diallo and Cunha at the centre of things again.

Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:36 , Will Castle

47 mins: Brighton struggling to get it clear as Mbeumo is nearly set through on goal, before Sesko nearly breaks in behind himself.

They do eventually get it up the other end but any chance is wasted by a wild effort by Baleba.

Had things gone differently in the summer, he’d be playing in red this evening. Instead, he’s being met by sarcastic cheers. Not a great afternoon so far for the midfielder.

BACK UNDERWAY! Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

'United have tended to perform well in the first half at Old Trafford'

18:22 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Old Trafford:

“A genuinely good first half from United but they have tended to be at Old Trafford this season. They were excellent before the break against Sunderland and Burnley. The Chelsea game began with an entertaining, if ludicrous, first 20 minutes. They began in decent fashion against Arsenal, too, albeit when while losing.”

HALF-TIME! Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:21 , Will Castle

Man United are on course to break their run of home to defeats to Brighton as they lead the Seagulls by two goals at the break.

Matheus Cunha finally opened his account for the club to break the deadlock, beautifully curling into the far corner from outside the box.

Casemiro then doubled their lead with a less aesthetically-pleasing goal - seeing his effort take a huge fortuitous deflection off a Brighton body before bouncing past a helpless Bart Verbruggen.

Could it be three in a row for Ruben Amorim?

HALF-TIME! Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:19 , Will Castle

Ruben Amorim’s side go into the break in full control.

Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:18 , Will Castle

45+1 mins: One minute added on - and Brighton could very well have pulled one back there.

Kadioglu misfires a volley but it flies perfectly into Rutter’s path on the edge of the six-yard box. The Frenchman doesn’t set himself and can’t get an effort towards goal.

That’ll be half-time...

Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:16 , Will Castle

44 mins: CLOSE! Another really good move as Fernandes and Mbeumo link up, before slotting Sesko into the box.

His first touch is really good, letting the ball coming across his body, but he slices his effort into the stands.

That would have been game over.

Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:13 , Will Castle

42 mins: Lovely first touch from Mbeumo completely takes Baleba out of the equation as United look to counter, leading to the midfielder bringing his countryman down to prevent any damage from being done.

He is shown a yellow for his troubles.

Manchester United 2-0 Brighton

18:09 , Will Castle

38 mins: The Premier League have now marked United’s second as Casemiro’s goal rather than an own goal from Ayari.

Man United looking very comfortable at the moment as Fernandes shoots wide from range.

'A distinctly fortunate goal'

18:06 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Old Trafford:

“A distinctly fortunate goal for Casemiro but it was notable that, long before he scored, the Stretford End were singing his name. The Brazilian has not always been a fan favourite at Old Trafford but in recent months it is evident that he was won back his place in the supporters' affections.”

GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Brighton (Casemiro, 34')

18:06 , Will Castle

A huge slice of luck for United!

Casemiro shoots from distance and it takes a MASSIVE deflection off Ayari, completely wrongfooting Verbruggen as it rolls past the helpless Brighton keeper into the net.

The hosts have breathing space.

Manchester United 1-0 Brighton

18:04 , Will Castle

33 mins: Diallo gets the better of De Cuyper down the left, skipping past his man into the box, but his pull-back doesn’t have the weight.

Manchester United 1-0 Brighton

18:02 , Will Castle

30 mins: That was a chance for Minteh.

De Ligt is crowded out by Brighton players on halfway, allowing the Seagulls to break through Minteh.

A really nice first touch takes him inside, driving into the box as red shirts dived in.

He stays on his feet before the ball rolls through to Lammens - but if he went down, safe to say he was in penalty territory.

'Matheus Cunha likes a shot from outside the box'

17:57 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Old Trafford:

“Matheus Cunha's first goal for Manchester United. He had been excellent at Anfield last week and decent on his debut against Arsenal, albeit with a lull in between, but had endured a wait to get off the mark. He likes a shot from outside the box and scored from just outside it.”

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Brighton (Cunha, 24')

17:54 , Will Castle

MATHEUS CUNHA GETS HIS GOAL!

It’s been a long wait for the Brazilian, but he’s finally off the mark in a United shirt - and didn’t he take it well!

He places a side-footed effort perfectly in the far corner, breaking the deadlock for the hosts.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:54 , Will Castle

22 mins: Another vocal appeal for a penalty as Ayari leaves the pass short before Mbeumo is pulled down on what was the edge of the Brighton box.

It wouldn’t have been a penalty either way - but the referee waves calls for a foul away.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:52 , Will Castle

21 mins: Corner opportunity from Brighton but Lammens rises confidently to claim.

That authority in the box is something United have really lacked with Onana and Bayindir between the sticks.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:50 , Will Castle

18 mins: A few flashes at goal for United!

Cunha stings the palms of Verbruggen, before a lofted cross from Fernandes just bounces past the post.

Momentum is shifting back in the hosts’ favour.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:47 , Will Castle

16 mins: Loud penalty shout from United as De Cuyper catches Diallo in the box - it was a 50/50 and looked like the Belgian got something on the ball, and VAR confirms the decision.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:46 , Will Castle

15 mins: CHANCE! Wonderful play from Brighton sees Rutter drive down the left before pulling the ball back to Welbeck, who just can’t get enough on his shot under pressure.

Lammens called into action for a relatively routine save.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:45 , Will Castle

14 mins: Brighton looking sharp on the ball at the moment, ticking it around the back after gritting through a bit of early pressure from the hosts.

You can tell they’re confident on this ground.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:42 , Will Castle

11 mins: The free-kick is headed clear before Baleba, a summer target of United, fires a weak effort wide of the mark.

'Yankuba Minteh is Brighton's most advanced player'

17:41 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Old Trafford:

“Yankuba Minteh is often Brighton's most advanced player. Which may be because United's right wing-back, Amad Diallo, is much more of a winger and Fabian Hurzeler thinks Albion can exploit the sapce behind him. Danny Welbeck, dropping into midfield, is often 10 or 15 yards behind Minteh.”

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:39 , Will Castle

9 mins: Ayari advances for Brighton and has a tussle with Yoro before going down, winning the free-kick on the edge of the area.

Yoro thinks that was soft.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:38 , Will Castle

7 mins: CHANCE! First glimpse of goal for Brighton, and it comes through a bit of brilliance from Welbeck!

He beats his man on the far side before sliding the ball across for Minteh, who should score - luckily for him, the flag goes up.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:36 , Will Castle

4 mins: A sloppy pass sees Brighton lose possession in their own third and Cunha looks to make them pay, but he sends his shot into the side netting.

Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

17:32 , Will Castle

1 min: The first half-chance comes United’s way inside 40 seconds as Mbeumo lifts in a cross for Fernandes, who heads wide from the centre of the box.

Not much pace on the delivery so was always going to be difficult to threaten Verbruggen’s goal - but a positive start nonetheless.

Marcus Rashford speaks out on Man United future after Barcelona loan

17:08 , Will Castle

Marcus Rashford has made it clear he wants to leave Manchester United permanently and stay at Barcelona beyond this season.

Asked if he wanted to stay at the Camp Nou, Rashford told ESPN: “Oh yeah, for sure. I’m enjoying this football club and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game. For a player it’s an honour.”

Rashford has a contract at Old Trafford until 2028 but having also spent a brief spell on loan at Aston Villa last season it is highly unlikely he will return under current boss Ruben Amorim.

Late drama in the Premier League

17:02 , Will Castle

We only had two 3pm kick-offs to sink our teeth into this afternoon - and boy did they deliver the drama!

Newcastle nicked it at the death against Fulham, with Bruno Guimaraes firing home in the 90th minute to put the Magpies 2-1 up at St James’s Park.

But that’s been made all but an afterthought by their North East rivals, with Sunderland coming from behind to snatch a last-gasp win over Chelsea at the Bridge!

Chemsdine Talbi was the difference-maker, scoring in the 93rd minute as this year’s surprise package notched a shock 2-1 win!

Manchester United to adapt in games to maintain ‘good spirit’ of winning

16:52 , Will Castle

Ruben Amorim says that Manchester United will be adaptable in games despite having one primary identity as they hope to build on back-to-back wins.

"We have one identity, one way of playing but we adapt what kind of game we need to play in the moment,” he explained at a press conference on Friday.

“You can sense that the first half against Sunderland was not the same as the second half. We know how to manage that. Then against Liverpool, of course, we scored right away in the first play. Then we managed the game playing in a different style because it was needed in that moment. That is a good thing.

"Then the spirit. Sometimes when you have a good spirit you have that bit of luck that we need to win games."

'Manchester United in uncharted territory'

16:25 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Old Trafford:

“Manchester United have entered what was uncharted territory for them: they have won two straight league games under Ruben Amorim. Now the chance to win three in a row. That said, Brighton have won three in a row: tasting victory on their last three trips to Old Trafford, all under different managers. Amorim had said Harry Maguire and Mason Mount were doutbs, and neither starts, with Leny Yoro and Benjamin Sesko coming in. Brighton's Danny Welbeck returns to Old Trafford and has a habit of scoring against United.”

Danny Welbeck returns to Old Trafford in flying form

16:23 , Will Castle

Off the back of his stunning brace against Newcastle last week, former Man United striker Danny Welbeck unsurprisingly keeps his place up top for the Seagulls.

Elsewhere, Diego Gomez comes out of the side, with Ferdi Kadioglu moving further forward and Maxim De Cuyper coming into left-back.

Ruben Amorim has no interest in Arne Slot’s assessment of Man Utd display

15:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Ruben Amorim does not care what Arne Slot has to say about his Manchester United team after the Liverpool boss spoke of low blocks and long balls following last weekend’s Anfield encounter.

It was Liverpool’s fourth straight loss in all competitions and boss Slot said afterwards that “it is always difficult to play against a team that defends in a low block and mainly plays the long ball.”

Amorim had no interest in the Dutchman’s assessment.

“I don’t care what Slot is saying, what people are saying about our team.

“I can evaluate my team and I am really clear that we should play better with the ball. We are going to try to do that in this game.”

Can Brighton make Premier League history at Old Trafford?

15:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Brighton have won their last three visits to Old Trafford and are aiming to become the first away team to win four in a row against Manchester United since Manchester City did so between 1968 and 1972.

The Seagulls have been United’s bogey team in recent years, and have won six of their last seven Premier League games against them.

Manchester United go for three in a row under Ruben Amorim

14:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Have Manchester United turned the corner under Ruben Amorim? Last Sunday’s 2-1 win at Premier League champions Liverpool and their first victory at Anfield in nine years was certainly the best result of Amorim’s troubled tenure, as well as the first time they had won back-to-back Premier League games under the Portuguese.

But United have been building some solid home form this season, and gave won their last three Premier League games at Old Trafford against Burnley, Chelsea and Sunderland. It’s their longest winning run at home in over two years.
